All About Masturbation

We are nearing the end of National Masturbation Month. Not that we need an excuse to jerk it, but this month has been a focus on self-love and the celebration of sex. Did you know this month's designation is thank you to San Francisco? You can thank a sex shop in San Fran called Good Vibrations. In 1994, Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders was forced to resign after she made the statement that solo sex is good and that we should be telling our youth it is ok to masturbate because it is healthy and may curb the rise of AIDS. The staff at Good Vibrations decided to rally and declare May as National Masturbation Month. It started in 1995. They launched a huge campaign incorporating celebrities in a Masturbation Hall of Fame, got Dan Savage to help spread the word, and got sex toy companies to join in. They even had a Masturbate-a-Thon to raise funds for sexual health organizations. Canada even got in on the idea.

Today, the promotion of the month is used in awareness to taking control of your own body as women's abortion rights and trans rights are being called into question. My body, my right. The month is also used to remove the stigma about talking about sex. The more we know about sex, the more we acknowledge sex, the more educated we are and ready to handle the outside world of doing it. We decided to end the month with a band and share some facts about masturbation.

Harvard Health did a study that states that masturbation can lower the risk of prostate cancer. That being said, unfortunately, masturbation doesn't have the same orgasm that is achieved with sex with a partner. Your semen makeup is actually different when masturbating than anal or vaginal sex. Intercourse has been found to help with blood pressure and heart issues, but not so with masturbating. But hey, who wants prostate cancer? Jerk away!

This one is a duh, but masturbation does not carry the risk of STDs. Talk about safe sex, this has to be the safest. Although too much masturbation or jerking off roughly can lead to skin irritation or bruising of the penis. You can actually rupture the blood vessels in your dick and cause major damage, sometimes needing surgery.

There is no such thing as too much masturbation. There are some ideas out there that jerking off too much can be harmful. The only thing that too much masturbation can be harmful is if it is taking away from normal life. Being late to work or calling out of work so you can jerk off all day? Might be an issue. Jerking off five times a day in the normal course of life? A ok. There are cases of compulsive masturbation where it literally disrupts someone's life. Also, if you are jerking off rather than having sex with your partner, that may be an issue.

In relation to what we just said, someone who masturbates while in a relationship has no correlation to said relationship. The thought that you shouldn't have to masturbate if you are in a good relationship is bull. Most guys jerk off if they are single, in a bad relationship, in a good relationship, etc. They just do. It helps alleviate stress and can help clear your head or help in going to sleep.

Not masturbating can actually be a sign of anxiety or health issues, like low testosterone. If you don't feel the urge, you should look into that.

So enjoy the rest of Masturbation Month, cheers!
