With an all-star cast that includes Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and hottie Jonathan Bailey, the first Wicked film will hit theaters on Thanksgiving Day, no doubt setting box office records for a musical. Wicked will be split into two parts, with the second installment hitting a year after the first.
Wicked is based on the stage musical by Stephen Schwartz which is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire. It has been twenty years since the musical first hit Broadway. The story is a prequel of sorts to Wizard of Oz (though the two stories overlap) and tells the tale of a young Wicked Witch (Elphaba) and Glinda (The Good Witch) sharing a room at school. Though unlikely pals, they become fierce friends who are torn apart by love and greed for power. The movie's story has been expanded and features a bevy of characters not featured in the stage musical.
A featurette featuring plenty of behind-the-scenes look at the film came out a couple of days ago:

We saw glimpses of Oz in the film's first teaser trailer but this new one features an in-depth look at the magical kingdom. This iteration of Wicked pays a definite homage to the film Wizard of Oz while capturing the quirkiness of the stage production. This is clearly Ariana and Cynthia's film. Looks like splitting the film into two parts will really give the characters a chance to explore their growing friendship so that the finale is that much more heartbreaking. In the trailer, we get our first audio peek at the singing. "Defying Gravity" and "Popular" are featured in the film, sounding a bit more pop with different rifts than the stage recording. Looks like Bowen Yang plays a Mean Girl-type friend to Glinda. Werk, girl! We also see Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, looking all studly. We can't wait to hear him sing.
Michelle Yeoh looks regal as Madame Morrible, but she doesn't seem as over the top as we think the character needs. Check her out:

In any case, the film looks spectacular, definitely worth the wait. Will you be going to see Wicked?
