A Look Back, Queer As Folk
We've had some pretty steamy gay programming courtesy of shows like Fellow Travelers, Euphoria, Hollywood, White Lotus, and more. Some things don't seem so shocking anymore, and finally we get some male nudity in the mix. More and more male celebs are showing skin, and we are here for the journey. But we can thank early pioneer shows like the US version of Queer as Folk. It's hard to believe the series is 24 years old. It truly pushed the limits of gay programming. Thank you, Mr. Man for capturing the hot content.
The US series ran from 2000 to 2005 and was based on the British series, created by Russell T Davies. The show celebrated the lives of five gay friends, a lesbian couple, and a fabulous mom who may have been the biggest ally on TV at the time.
While the series did show us a lot of hot skin, it also dealt with issues like HIV, homelessness, addiction, and more. But it did let the TV community that the gays were here, we have sex, and we love having it. Yassss!
One of the series' hottest couples was Justin and Brian, a twunk and his man. Their relationship gave us some of the most explicit scenes but also evolved into a romance that we could be jealous of. Hot Brian, played by Gale Harold, went from sex fiend to lover. We may have shed a tear or two.
Randy Harrison as Justin gave us our twunk fantasies, he was so cute! As an actor, he also appeared a number of plays, including the musicals Wicked (Broadway) and West Side Story.
The follow up gay couple was Michael and Ben, who gave us the true romance story. Though sometimes we yawned at their couple issues, they still had some hot scenes. Where's our hunk of Ben to walk into our lives?
Queer As Folk had a reboot in 2022 but didn't click. It did have hot scenes like the original, but tried to throw every LGBTQ theme at the wall, it was a bit much. It was canceled after the first season.
We loved that the original US series celebrated romantic sex as well as our casual hookups. Hookups are just part of our culture and should be talked about!
Queer As Folk also gave us a bevy of hot one time appearance actors in the buff. We would have loved to be in the casting room for this series!
Queer As Folk is worth a rewatch or an original watch if you haven't seen it. Many of the themes, although an all-white cast, are still relevant for our community today. Plus, you get to see a lot of man-on-man action.
