Sam Smith Hits the Runway, Social Media Says No
Paris Fashion Week got a surprise model this last weekend for the Vivienne Westwood Fall/Winter 2024 runway. Not your typical model, non-binary singer Sam Smith took the stage, strutting his stuff...and social media wasn't having it.
The look in question? What some social media users called Queerheart, he took to the runway in a V-neck t-shirt, red flannel-like shawl/jacket, a revealing kilt, long socks, patterned platform boots, and a headpiece/veil. His butt cheeks in a jockstrap also peeked out during his walk. Take a look:

In addition to the usual hate speech directed towards the LGBTQ community regarding men in skirts, non-binary representation, queer people in general all reared their ugly heads. No big surprise. But some of the internet clapped back in a comedic way, making fun of the look in general.

I feel like this is Sam Smith’s entire personality at this point https://t.co/ZT2cfVwzqR pic.twitter.com/SMQGittJEo

Sam also modeled a second look, which appeared a bit more expected fashion.

Not only did Sam receive raised eyebrows towards the fashion show, but the show in general. With some people asking, what the hell has happened to Vivienne Westwood?

So, here's the conundrum. We know the gays can be funny and sassy and can read a queen from across the room. BUT, when we are dealing with hate comments that are flying around the web just based on someone's body size or gender/sexual identity, can we even throw shade? Or is that feeding fuel to the fire? Also, there's a fine line between good taste and pushing the envelope. What if his modeled outfit was just hideous and had nothing to do with his identity? We know this isn't the first time Sam Smith's fashion has been called into question.
What say you?
