Spain Has Its First Openly LGBTQ Matador!
Aye aye aye! We just love matadors. Those tight pants, those slim waists, the machismo of it all...did we mention the tight pants? Not much is left to the imagination as bulges and butts move to and fro while avoiding the horny...um, horns of an oncoming bull. Despite how flamboyant matadors dress and move around the arena, there haven't been any openly queer matadors...until now.
Coming out in the major Spanish media outlet, Mario Alcalde told El Mundo, “I am a bullfighter. I go at my own pace. I think differently than other bullfighters. My tastes are not the norm in bullfighting. Both politically and sexually. I am pansexual and I feel very identified with the LGTBI flag. I fall in love with the interior, I don’t care about gender.”

(OK, but look at the bulge!)
Spain's big cities all have gay sections, with nightlife and cafes. There are a number of Pride events throughout the year, and it has become a popular tourist country for our community. Spain has been considered progressive when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights. Most Spanish people support the rights of the community, same-sex marriage became legal in 2005. Gay adoptions are legal, and there are anti-discrimination laws in place in the workforce and regarding housing. Transgender and non-binary protection and rights are still a work in progress.
The sport of bullfighting has always been considered a macho sport. Does Alcalde think being a queer matador will change his fans' view of him? He told the publication that most bullfighting fans are liberal, but he still isn't sure how his fans will respond, and that he doesn't really care because he's ready to live his life.

Bullfighting itself has become very controversial and is, in fact, banned in many cities in Spain. PETA reported that only 19% of Spanish citizens actually support the sport. Alcalde believes that most gay people are against bullfighting but maybe his coming out will change that, and he even wants to create a queer bullfighting event. Girl, even though we love a matador in his tight outfit, we aren't so sure about the brutal treatment of the bulls.
