NYC for the Holidays? 6 Must-See Broadway Shows

BROADWAY

Gay Pop Culture News

It's Christmas time in the city! Broadway heats up during the holidays with tourists flooding New York City to see the giant tree at Rockefeller Center, the ice skating rink, the shopping, and of course, a Broadway show. Choosing the right show is a tall order (especially at these prices!), and we're here to help. If you're heading to NYC this holiday season, here are six shows to check out while you're in town.

Merrily We Roll Along

This critically-acclaimed revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical is legit the hottest ticket in town! Tickets are priced between $400-800 a piece right now so....yeah. The musical follows a trio of friends from their teens through their 40s but is told backward in time. The revival stars out gay heartthrob Jonathan Groff, as well as Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe and Tony Award winner Lindsay Mendez. If you can go, and you can afford it, it's definitely the show to see this Christmas season.

Harmony

This new musical by living legend (and gay fam) Barry Manilow tells the forgotten true story of The Comedian Harmonists, a political satire group from Germany who was a HUGE success in the 1930s until Hitler took power. The show has absolutely gorgeous music and harmonies, some outstanding performances, and some VERY cute actors. The six stars are all new to the Broadway scene and by the end, I didn't know which one I was crushing on the most.

Back to the Future

Based on the beloved Michael J. Fox film from the 1980s, Back to the Future the musical is a pretty faithful adaptation of the movie. In case you live under a rock, Back to the Future is the time traveling tale of Marty McFly. On Broadway, McFly is played by sexy AF twink Casey Likes. And they keep the scenes of him in briefs, so that's worth the price of admission right there.

Some Like It Hot

Another musical based on a beloved classic film is Some Like It Hot. The show tells the story of two musicians hiding from the mob by pretending to be women in an all-female band, and them both finding unlikely love. Like the film, there's a ton of drag but the musical also has our modern sensibility about trans issues also included. The show is a big, splashy hit, winning many theatre awards, and the tap dancing is out of this world good. Some Like It Hot closes on Broadway at the end of the year, so hurry to see it while you can!

Appropriate

Queer star Sarah Paulson is back on Broadway for the first time in years in the new play Appropriate. Written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the play follows the dysfunctional Lafayette family as they all return to a dilapidated plantation mansion in Arkansas to battle over their recently-deceased father's estate.

We Are Here

The new musical We Are Here isn't technically on Broadway but it is the final Sondheim show he ever created and it has an all-star cast of Tony and Emmy winners showing out for Steve one last time. It's a surrealist piece of theatre happening off-Broadway but it's also history in the making so you don't want to miss it.
