Drag Queen Spotlight: Kitty Glitter Talks Seattle, Glitter, & Hooking Up In Drag

DRAG QUEEN SPOTLIGHT

Drag queen Kitty Glitter in white and a fan.

Would you look at the time! It’s time for another fierce edition of Drag Queen Spotlight! This is where I introduce you to an incredible drag queen that you need to know about! Each queen will answer an array of questions, and I’ll sprinkle in some of my favorite pictures and videos of them. This week we’re having a Kiki with the stunning Kitty Glitter from Seattle! She’s serving 100% glamour with her glitter beard and hairy chest. It’s truly wondrous! Check out her answers below, and follow her on Instagram!

How did you get your drag name?

My ex convinced me to go out in drag for the first time to this new avant-garde look party thrown by Arson Nicki, who’s absolutely prolific here. The party was called Rapture and there was always a runway curated the night of with some of the best looks of the night, pop-up performances, and a photo booth that was created by a different local artist monthly. A lot of the scene started at Rapture from my generation, including Bosco!

I never saw myself as wanting to do traditional drag, I was always interested in gender fuck/club kid aesthetics because I always felt very half and half myself, so I wore a glitter beard and a flower crown with my friend’s LBD and a flamboyant coat my dad made me for Godspell in junior high. My ex came up with the name Kitty Glitter and it just felt correct. Glitter beard. I love cats and sex kitten sad-girl vibes. My boy name starts with a K.

How long have you been doing drag?

That party was 7 years ago, but I didn’t really start performing or working in drag until 5 years ago.

When is your birthday? How old are you?

April 1992, I’m 31.

Relationship status?

Single, and I like it like that.

What made you want to start doing drag?

When I went to Rapture I was so nervous, but Arson came up to me wearing a chic little black wig and a vintage black dress with white insects patterning it and I was instantly smitten. Arson said “You are what this event is all about,” and asked me to walk in the runway that night, and it was the most powerful I’d ever felt in my life.

Who inspires your drag (celebrities, other queens, etc.)?

I was a musical theatre major and a hip-hop dancer growing up, so performance-wise I was inspired by any whimsical, sexually charged ridiculous storyline I could weave together with my own voiceovers and my favorite music. Aesthetically I was inspired by a Portland club kid Hydrangea Estrangea and Faggedy Randy who’s a Burlesque god from Seattle.

Have you ever hooked up in drag?

To my own shock and awe, I’ve hooked up a lot in drag. You’d be surprised how many people are okay with you eating their asses with a glitter beard on.

What’s your favorite thing about drag?

My favorite thing about drag is that there are no rules. Like a lot of queer people, I grew up loving art and knowing I was an artist, but I didn’t feel like I fit into any traditional role or space. In drag, I’ve been able to create my own lane and have total autonomy over the mixes, choreography, aesthetics, and branding. It’s incredibly liberating.

What’s your secret to getting the perfect glitter beard?

You really just have to find the perfect brand. I won’t give mine away because I’m choosing violence right now, but aloe is a great adhesive, lots of companies sell glitter glue — the key is the smaller and more pigmented the better!

What’s the craziest thing you’ve witnessed in a dressing room?

To be honest, the dressing room at Queer Bar has been my home for 5 years and it’s insane but I’m so used to it that it’s hard to single anything out that feels out of the ordinary. I definitely brought two dudes back and sucked them off after Karaoke a few years ago… so that would’ve been wild to walk in on.

Biggest pet peeve about audiences in nightclubs?

My biggest pet peeve is when audiences are low energy or don’t scream. I could get tipped the house down for a number but if no one makes any sound I want to die.

Any advice for someone wanting to start doing drag?

My advice for anyone who wants to start doing drag is don’t do it, it will take over your life!! I’m half joking, but really I think the most important thing is to trust your instincts and give back to the people who give you a platform.
