Whether it’s faked cum shots or the differences between Viagra and Cialis, there are so many aspects to porn that you won’t discover just by watching it. You learn so many things about porn when you’re making and distributing it. Of course, everyone’s experiences are drastically different, and I can only speak from my own experience. That being said, here are 5 things that I learned from my time in porn.
1. Party Games. If you’re out at a party and meeting new people, you’ll likely be interrogated by pretty much anyone who asks the most basic of questions, “So, what do you do?” Let’s face it: people don’t meet folks from the porn industry too often, and you’ve likely succeeded at peaking their curiosity, whether that was your intention or not.
2. Play Hard to Get. Even better, a lot of people will recognize you for your work. People will come up to you on the street or at happy hour; you’ll get texts and DMs from people you went to HS and college with (who for some reason still have your number!); and my favorite is when you find yourself talking to someone—either freshly acquainted or someone you haven’t seen since before the career change—and you know that they know but you can tell that they don’t want to be the one to bring up the fact that they’ve seen you busting your nut all over a frat bro’s face on their web browser. Instead, they try so hard to direct the conversation in a direction that prompts you to bring it up. Make them sweat, comrade. Make them sweat.
3. Get Physical. Porn can definitely be physically demanding as f*ck. Porn is not just about looking sexy; it’s a highly physically-demanding profession. It requires strength, flexibility, and, most importantly, stamina. I mean, think about it; when was the last time you f*cked for actual hours on end while flexing your stomach the whole time? Thought so. That being said, it’s a hell of a calisthenics workout that I highly recommend.
4. The Stigma Is Real. While there’s a growing acceptance of adult entertainment and the sex-working community, stigma and prejudice still exist. Many folks face challenges with the way people choose to see and treat them. It’s amazing how, in a society where almost everyone is a consumer of the industry, there are still minds so closed as to look down on sex workers in order to feel bigger themselves. Get laid, get a therapist, I don’t care. Just get out of my way, thanks.
5. Community Matters. The porn community, like other professional communities, is comprised of many circles of support. When you find your people, you find your people. The adult industry has so many kind and supportive performers, cameramen, directors, and then some. In my experience, some can even become great friends (and friends with benefits), providing a strong support system while navigating the industry’s more unique challenges. Maybe it’s the whole vulnerability of it all, or maybe I’ve just been lucky. Who’s to say…
I’ve learned a lot of different things. These right here, I’d have to say, are my top 5. Of course, some things are best kept hush-hush. I don’t want to shatter the entire illusion, after all. Now let’s close that curtain back up, shall we? Until Next time...
