Summer is not officially over just yet, which means there’s still time to talk about pool parties! I’ve been to more than I can count this year, and I have collected the best tips to help you throw the hottest party. Speedos, booze, and boys are the obvious essentials, but there are some not-so-obvious essentials that will turn your party up to a 10! Here are 10 tips for hosting the hottest gay pool party:

1. Invite more than just your best friends and guys you want to fuck. One of the best features of parties is socializing, and if it’s just your core group and a few hot guys… boring. Invite as many people as your place can hold and see who shows up! This is a great way to network and meet new friends, not just for you, but also for your guests. But be wary of your guests’ guests. For instance, you don’t want anyone bringing their fam to a very adult party, so make sure you state that your event is 21+ just in case.

2. Provide snacks and finger food for your guests. This is best served inside and out of the sun, on a dining room table or kitchen island. Food is so important, especially if people are going to be there for an extended period of time. Also, if people are drinking, it’ll give them something to keep them from falling out if they drink too much. This feature doesn’t have to break the bank, but a few snack trays, some chips, and a small sandwich or sub-tray are a great base for the food options.

3. Designate one room for the sex. If your party is that kind of party, keep sex away from the rest of the crowd. Not everyone wants to play, and it can actually ruin the time for the people who aren’t horny. Put a sign on the door of the designated room, and let your guests know as they arrive. If your intent is to have a sex-centric pool party, let people know in advance that it will be open season. Oh, and don’t forget the poppers and lube!

4. Music is always a must, and everyone does it differently. If you plan on streaming from your phone to your speakers just make sure you keep your phone next to the devices at all times and put it on DND. The last thing people want to hear is the music cutting out because the host is too far from the speaker or getting a call. Also, create a playlist ahead of time with enough music for the duration of the party. This keeps your sad songs from accidentally playing and killing everyone’s vibe.

5. Always have a plethora of towels by the pool, or instruct people to bring their own! People will be running in and out to socialize, eat, use the restroom, etc, and they will be wet. I’ve seen beautiful floors look like a dirty slip n’ slide before the end of a party. Avoid this by proactively addressing the towel situation.

6. Be prepared for the sun, because sometimes your friends aren’t. It’s a great gesture to buy at least a couple cans of cheap sunscreen (spray kind) and have them somewhere visible for people to use before taking on the sun.

7. I’ve seen the beverage situation done several different ways, but this is the best I’ve concluded. Get a very large cooler and fill it halfway with ice. If you instruct people to BYOB, they’ll likely bring a case of Truly or White Claw. You can have a few already in there before they arrive, and then just replenish with the new ones as they come. As far as liquor, keep a table inside near the food with all the mixers and liquor along with an ice bucket and scoop. Red solo cups work just fine for everyone’s mixed drinks. Keep a couple of bags of ice handy for replenishment.

8. Parking can be a pain, always let your guests know in advance what the situation is. Give clear instructions, and always advise people to Uber or Lyft if they’ll be drinking. This reduces the risk of drinking and driving and gives you peace of mind that your guests are safe!

9. Scheduling can be tricky. The best days for pool parties are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 2 PM - 8 PM is an appropriate time frame, but it can go later if you’d like. The trick with scheduling is to make sure that it doesn’t overlap with other events.

10. The last and final tip is to have fun. Don’t stress or be overbearing. If you stress, your guests will feel that as well. Remember, you set the tone for your space. Smile and have the time of your life!
