Hello there! It’s a brand new day, and that means it’s time for another Drag Queen Spotlight! This is the weekly feature where I introduce you to a fierce drag artist that you need to know about! This week’s Spotlight is none other than the fierce Azula! She’s a sickening queen from LA! Azula is a self-proclaimed supervillain (same though) and high-concept wigstress to the stars! How did you get your drag name?

My favorite character from Avatar: The Last Airbender. The psycho villian Azula. She’s one of those villains you can’t hate because she’s funny, and badass. We both have mommy issues, and we just want to rule the world.

How long have you been doing drag?

I’ve been going drag for six years, and performing for four!

When is your birthday? How old are you?

My birthday is on March 6, #Pisces. And I’m currently on level 26.

Relationship status?

Taken! I have my drag villain boyfriend Robaire Banned.

What was your first time in drag like?

My college volleyball teammate started drag in 2015, and for my birthday, she put me in drag for the first time! I looked…cute.

What made you want to start doing drag?

In 2017, I developed an interest in makeup! I was trying out different styles, and around that time, I discovered RuPaul’s Drag Race. And one of the first seasons I watched was Season 6! I watched it only because I recognized Adore Delano from YouTube, and after watching Drag Race I noticed all the different types of makeup styles such as Kim Chi, Acid Betty, Valentina, and Miss Fame! I then started to mimic their makeup on myself, and from there I knew I wanted to start doing drag!

Who inspires your drag (celebrities, other queens, etc.)?

My biggest inspirations are other drag queens: Kim Chi, Gottmik, Envy Peru, Symone, and one of my all-time favorites, Ellis Atlantis!

Favorite song/artist to lip sync to?

Honestly, as cliché as it is, “Hush Hush” by the Pussycat Dolls gives me life. The beat, the drama, it gives it all.

Have you ever hooked up in drag?

OH YES! Not anymore, but definitely back then as a baby queen. I would rent out hotel rooms to practice my drag, and afterward, I would have some fun with the local straights.

What’s your favorite thing about drag?

Getting out of it. Just joking, I think in the moment, performing is so exhilarating! All the attention and money and cheers, it’s addicting.

What are your hobbies outside of drag?

I was on my HS swim team, and to this day I love to swim either for leisure or working out.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve witnessed in a dressing room?

Catching a queen giving another queen a blowjob in the bathroom. It was kinda funny not gonna lie. Seeing the ratted-up wig going in, gave me life!

Biggest pet peeve about working with other drag queens?

The needy drag artist who constantly asks for things as we’re all getting ready.

Biggest pet peeve about audiences in nightclubs?

Lack of energy I think is the biggest one. But also judgemental audience members who are not performers themselves throwing shade. Like, excuse me? Just sit down and give the artist a dollar, Mary.

Any advice for someone wanting to start doing drag?

Just go for it! Drag is a journey of self-discovery, and all of us have different paths. It really is one of the most rewarding challenges. Once you get that drag bug going, there is no stopping! Also, don’t compare yourself to other Drag Artists, just remember, you’re only competing against yourself!
