Hey Gurl! with Jordan Jayro: Rubella Spreads Talks DJing, Nightlife, and Drag

Hello ladies, gays and theys! It’s that time of the week! A brand new episode of my podcast, Hey Gurl! With Jordan Jayro just came out, and it is fierce! This week I got to chat with the incredible Rubella Spreads! Rubella is a legendary drag queen here in Los Angeles, and an amazing DJ. If you’ve been out to a gay bar in LA, you’ve probably attended an event where Rubella was the DJ. We met a while back at Precinct. I was with some friends at Que Perra (a drag show hosted by friend-of-the-pod Ruthless Envy). I was with friends and they introduced me to Rubella and we started chatting. I didn’t recognize her because she was out of drag but eventually, we figured out who each other was. I’m so glad to finally be getting her on the pod! She’s such a hoot!

We started the episode by addressing the alleged homeless man outside her apartment. Rubella mentioned that this man had been playing the snare drum loudly for hours and refused to stop. I love downtown, but that would drive me crazy. I don’t think I have the patience for that. But kudos to her for being a good sport and laughing about it. My cranky ass would have been losing my mind. That somehow segued into drag queens smelling bad. We pretty quickly agreed that queens don’t wash their undergarments nearly enough. People will wear undies and tights in the hot sun for hours then shove them into a suitcase until the next gig. Gross!

Rubella and I chatted a bit about some of the crazy stories we have from working in nightlife. I feel like everyone has a horror story about a venue or a promoter. I feel like I’ve seen it all. People screw up the money, people steal from the performers. It’s truly insane. And as a DJ, Rubella has to deal with all that plus people making annoying requests. People are really out here asking to hear Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran at the gay bar. I love them both, but there’s a time and a place! And it is not at midnight at the gay bar!

I asked Rubella about her experience with the injection for prep. She says she enjoys it since it was tricky remembering the take the pill every day. I recalled a friend of mine having a not-so-great experience with the two injections of prep that get put in your stomach. Rubella said the one she gets is a single injection in her butt. Which prompted me to talk about butt bruising from gonorrhea injections. Just because I’m a serious journalist and a broadcaster.
