Elliot Page Returns to Big Screen Following Memoir ‘Pageboy’

Academy Award-nominee Elliot Page announced he's returning to the big screen for the first time in nearly six years. Though he's most known for starring as Viktor Hargreeves in the wildly successful Umbrella Academy, Page will be making his first feature film since 2017's Flatliners. The movie that's going to bring him back is Close to You from director Dominic Savage.

Page and Savage co-wrote the script together, which, according to Variety, will apparently tell the story of a character named Sam (Page) who runs into an old friend "on his way home to a dreaded family reunion that forces him to confront long-buried memories." The two are also co-producing the film together.

Page told Deadline about his excitement for the movie, saying, "I’m proud to have worked with Dominic and Hillary on this beautiful film. It’s been a pleasure collaborating with them and the incredibly talented cast and crew. I look forward to sharing it with audiences soon." And Savage is equally thrilled to be working with Page again, telling Deadline, "It has been a remarkable experience to collaborate with Elliot Page on this very special and unique film about love, identity, and family."

Page's return to feature films is of particular note because it comes on the heels of his popular and controversial memoir Pageboy: A Memoir being released. Specifically, Pageboy details Page's horrible experiences in Hollywood. Page chronicled his experiences as a closeted trans man and being forced to wear dresses, as well as enduring homophobic assaults from an A-list actor. Reportedly, the actor confronted Page shortly after he came out and said, "You aren't gay. That doesn’t exist." As well as, “I’m going to fuck you to make you realize you aren’t gay." Page also noted that this person "was, and still is, one of the most famous actors in the world."

Pageboy also gets into past relationships the actor had, including to Kate Mara and an unnamed actor who was closeted. The two dated while Page was filming X-Men: Days of Future Past, and just to give you an inkling as to where Mara and Page stand, Mara has read the book and the two will apparently make appearances together at book events for Pageboy.

Between the romantic heartbreak Page associates with his time as a Hollywood A-lister, as well as the abject confrontational situations he found himself in, this foray back into feature films is no doubt one that carries with it a lot of extra layers; it's a good thing that Page had such a hand in creating this upcoming art. Savage previously directed the BAFTA-winning TV films Nice Girl and When I Was 12 so Page is also in incredibly good hands with his director and co-collaborator.

As a huge fan of Page's, I'm so excited for this movie to come out, and I can't wait until we start getting more details and a trailer.
