Sir Jet Talks WeHo Pride and “Break Free”

INTERVIEWS

Sir Jet Q&A Weho Pride

Pride month is starting this week, and we're kicking off things with our WeHo Pride After Dark Party at Rocco's on Wednesday May 31 at 9pm! Hosting the festivities will be none other than the amazing Billy Francesca. We will also have Adam Ramzi, Asher Day, Sir Jet, and many more! In today's hostile climate towards LGBTQIA+ people, we could all use a refresher on why Pride is important. In preparation for Pride month, I reached out to Sir Jet to tell us what Pride means to them.

Tell me, who is Sir Jet?

It was a stage name given to me by a former manager back in 2010 when everyone was trying to hop on the royalty trend after Lady Gaga. JET is my initials and the “sir” was to promote the idea that I was everyone’s knight in shining armor. As a pop act at the time, I was being groomed to be the next outlandish Gaga-type act, and there were several investment offers, but unfortunately, the record companies wanted either women or men who “played it safe” with their image, so nothing much came of it. I held on to the name after all these years because I still believe in the power of helping others. Simply being my gender non-conforming self has helped a lot of people discover and explore their own gender duality, and so it’s very rewarding helping so many find themselves too.

I hear you just moved to Los Angeles, so firstly congrats on that! How has that transition been?

The three years I spent living in Hollywood a decade ago were some of the most productive years of my life career-wise, and so I had the idea that coming back would help rejuvenate and restart my career that has been hard to progress on living in Phoenix. It hasn’t been an easy transition thus far because I’m still having doors closed in my face, but perseverance is what has brought me this far, so I’m going to keep working hard until a new door finally opens for me.

Tell me about your first LGBTQIA+ Pride, what was it like?

I actually got kicked out of my first Pride for handing out copies of my CD to anyone who wanted to take a picture with me, lol. But then later that year, thanks to my first single doing well on Logo’s Click List, I was able to book performances at Milwaukee Pride and Colorado Springs Pride, and those first two gigs were rewarding to me because I got to meet so many unique people from all walks of life.

What does Pride mean to you?

Pride means a personal acknowledgment you give to yourself that it is ok to be you. It’s giving yourself permission to be yourself, whomever that may be, while understanding that the people around you may not understand who you are, but it will not stop you from ever being that person. Often finding out who you are is a life-long journey, but having pride gives you permission to be proud and loving of that person you find yourself to be.

We're so excited to have you at our WeHo Pride event, what are you most excited for?

I look forward to meeting new people I would not otherwise be able to meet. Pride events bring in such a cornucopia of individuals.

What are you planning on wearing to Weho Pride?

It’s pink and fluffy and has matching heels.

What are some of your favorite things to do in your free time, any hobbies?

I binge-watch Bob’s Burgers. I think I’ve seen every episode at least four times, lol. That and just playing dress-up. I love to take out my bags of lingerie, stockings, and accessories, and put them together in different looks like I’m putting together a puzzle. It’s similar to how I used to play with Barbies as a kid, but now I’m the Barbie.

What's next for Sir Jet?

My new single, “Break Free,” is out now. It’s part of my upcoming EP, Male Femininity, which will be out this fall and have a new music video for the title track. I’m very excited for this project. It’ll be my first release since 2020’s Empowered Bottom.
