Grindr Fails: Femme Guys, Catfishing, and Job Interviews

Hello and welcome back for another edition of #GrindrFails!! These are always some of my favorite things to find online. I’ll never not be shocked by the audacity some of these people have on dating apps. Clearly, audacity is at an all-time high and I’m here to dissect it all. This week we’ve got a gay on a mission to get a job through Grindr! Should straight men be allowed on Grindr? These men are out here sending pictures from over thirty years ago, and we are discussing the “no femmes” issue affecting gay men everywhere. Let’s jump right in!

There is so much to unpack from this short exchange. First of all, what about someone saying “Hey” leads you to believe they’re femme? And even if their profile picture leads you to think they may be on the femme side, who cares? Some of these gays who look really tough and masc in their pictures open their mouths and puppies fall out! So there’s really no way to know for sure. It also really doesn’t matter. If someone asks me if I’m masculine or feminine, I just end the conversation there. People who feel the need to ask something like that don’t deserve sex. And kudos to this person for clapping back so fiercely!

You know what? Just when I think I’ve seen it all, the universe has its own clever way of shocking me once more. Here we have a classic case of a man with a misleading picture getting clocked. Sir, the year is 2023. How do you think you can send a picture from 1991 and pass it as a current photo? And moreover, how do you not see the date watermarked on the picture?! If you’re going to catfish, please come correct. Better yet, don’t do it at all! Post your ugliest pictures, so you can be a pleasant surprise when you arrive. I don’t know what is more upsetting, the fact that he sent a picture from 1991, or the fact that I wasn’t even born when that picture was taken.

I am so tickled by this! It almost feels like a right of passage for a gay man to cum across (see what I did there) a curious straight man. In a world where people are conditioned to think that sexuality is a “this-or-that” kind of thing, it’s very common. And while I think everyone should be allowed the freedom to safely and openly explore their sexuality, there is something oddly off-putting about a “straight” man on a gay hookup app. I’m always thinking about how annoying it is knowing that people think they can enjoy the benefits of our community without living with the repercussions. Some of us don’t have the luxury of hiding behind our cis heterosexuality. Maybe this is a much deeper conversation. Either way, this “not gay” man certainly knows how to clap back like the best of em’. You go, girl!

Far be it from me to stop someone’s hustle! As a working drag queen, I know the importance of taking initiative and creating your own opportunities. And this fellow here, seen reaching out to a man who interviewed him for a job, is my kind of gal. Closed mouths don’t get fed! And maybe having his mouth wide open can only help him in this situation. I am not above doing whatever you have to do in order to get the gig. As long as all parties involved are consenting adults and can be grown-ups about it. And you never know, he may own the company by now. I’d like an update, please!
