Marcia Gay Harden Reveals All Three of Her Kids Are Queer

CELEBRITY

News on LGBT Celebs, Queer Celebs, and Gay Celebs.

I went back and forth with the title on this one. First, it was "It's All In the Name" and then it was "Homos By Any Other Name" (it's giving Billy Shakes realness). But in the end, the simple statement was just too perfect as-is. At last week's Drag Isn't Dangerous Telethon, Academy Award-winner Marcia Gay Harden revealed that every one of her kids has come out as Queer.

During the telethon, Harden stated, “What drives me is because it’s right, and what’s happening right now is wrong. What drives me is, my children are all Queer.” Harden has three kids: Eulala (24), Julitta (19), and Hudson (19). "My eldest child is non-binary. My son is gay. My youngest is fluid. And you know, they are my kids, and they teach me every day," Harden told the audience.

After the telethon was over, Harden continued her advocacy on Instagram, encouraging people to continue donating. "Join the @dragisntdangerous fundraiser in support of LGTBQ+, which basically means in support of all of us!" she wrote. "Our nation, our neighbors, our children, artists, our singers, our dancers, our better leaders, CEOs, writers, spiritual leaders, basically our humanity. Gay is here to stay. Drag is here to stay. Donate what you can, and join us in spreading the love."

Putting aside her iconically 'Gay' name, Harden has long been a supporter of LGBTQ+ people. She's also starred in some of the most important and amazing Queer movies, TV shows, and plays of all time. She originated the role of Harper Pitt in Tony Kushner's groundbreaking Angels In America on Broadway (for which she was nominated for a Tony Award), and if you've never seen The First Wives Club... first of all, what are you doing with your life? Second, enjoy this clip from one of my favorite scenes ever.

The Drag Isn't Dangerous Telethon—co-hosted by drag icons Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 and Peppermint, along with Adam Shankman (director of Hairspray and Disenchanted), and comic Justin Martindale—was organized to raise money to combat the hate being spewed in the country right now against LGBTQ+ people. The event featured a combination of both live and pre-taped performances and showcased some of the greatest drag performers in the world such as Jinkx Monsoon, Trixie Mattel, Kerri Colby, and more. In addition to Harden, it was also an absolutely star-studded event with major allies turning out to support us. Sarah Silverman, Margaret Cho, Melissa McCarthy, Lance Bass, and Frankie Grande all showed up to raise money, among many others. And holy shit did they raise some money! The one-night-only event raised over half a million dollars ($523,000 to be exact)!

The net proceeds from the telethon will be divided between pre-approved charities that support LGBTQ+ causes, particularly in the states that are actively targeting us. GLAAD, GLSEN, Headcount, Black Queer Town Hall, The ACLU Drag Defense Fund, Trans Justice Funding Project, and Victory Fund are all doing amazing work to fight for our rights, and now they will have some extra dough in their coffers to fight the good fight. If you missed the telethon, you can still donate to the event's GoFundMe page, which has already brought the total to almost $600,000!
