We were thrilled to welcome Ryder Flynn for his first online interview:

What has brought you to the adult film industry? Was this something you have been interested in for some time? 

To be honest, I’ve always been curious about getting into the adult film industry since I was old enough to watch. I’ve considered getting into it at different points in time and always chickened out for one reason or another, but recently the voice in my head was like “You should finally scratch that itch and see what it’s all about.” So here I am. I’ve always seen myself as a queer, sex-positive person and I think this has been/is a great way to explore that side of myself more, as well as meet like-minded individuals.

What are some of your plans? Who do you want to work with?

I am not one for making plans, professionally or personally, but right now I’d say I am still in the having fun stage of just getting into the industry. When I first started, I told myself that I would continue this venture as long as it is mutually beneficial for me and my business partners. My hope is that I continue to grow in the business and gain as much exposure and experience as possible working with each scene partner, photographer, studio, etc.

I am definitely open to working with whomever and wouldn’t say I have a particular type, though I have always gravitated towards guys my age/older who lean toward the muscular/fit side. Oh, and sexy daddies! I’ve been lucky to already meet up with some of my porn crushes but if I had to choose some that I haven’t met yet, I would love to set something up with Cole Connor, or if the porn gods allow it, Dean Flynn who was my first porn crush ever and inspiration for my name. I am very vers, so flip-fucking is my favorite. That said, they could legit do whatever they wanted to me.

What was it like seeing your first scene?

Shooting my first scene was a little nerve-wracking if I’m being totally honest. Luckily, it was all in my head since all of my content before had been from me holding the camera or propping it up on a random item in my apartment to get a flattering angle. It was definitely different but I was very fortunate to work with Sean Cody for my first time and they made it super easy and fun. I got a lot of great direction and feedback from their crew, which has already served me well with photoshoots I’ve had since filming with them. I think the biggest note I got was remembering to make noises/sounds because I am a soft-spoken person in the bedroom to begin with. Couple that with the fact that I hate the sounds of my own voice and you have created an existential crisis of me feeling awkward trying to make non-awkward, authentic-sounding sex noises. I will say I got better with each passing scene so it’s still a work in progress but I’m on the up and up.

What about outside of performing? Who is the "real" Ryder Flynn? 

I’m just your normal, awkward, shy guy (see what I did there). I think it’s hard to attach myself to a particular label because I am a mix of so many. I am an anime nerd, videogame addict, jock (in the sense that I grew up playing several sports and can easily get sucked into any game/match on TV), house music junkie, terrible dancer, and promiscuous slut just to name a few. I’m very extroverted in small groups and one-on-ones, but extremely introverted in large crowds or with new people. My preferred hangouts are normally hyper-queer, low-key environments where there is no judgment. I like to be/stay active, especially when it’s nice outside (which is rare in Chicago) and I work out pretty much every day. I love to travel and am trying to take more international trips this year to start seeing more of the beautiful world we live in.

What are some of your other interests and activities outside of sex on screen?

I’m kind of a boring homebody. I am a video game addict as I mentioned earlier. Anyone who follows me on Twitter knows I am a DBD (Dead By Daylight) addict, but I will play anything - RPGs, first-person shooters, Pokémon, etc. I have a nine-year-old dog that I love to take to the park or walk by the lake with. Both of which usually result in us falling asleep under a tree together. I love to walk and ride my bike around the city any chance I can to sightsee or see what’s going on around town. One of my personal goals lately has been to read more, so I’ve been sticking to that and am on a self-help book kick at the moment. While I don’t go out that often, living in Chicago has spoiled me with bars that play good house music and have dark rooms where no one can see my offbeat dancing when I do get the urge to venture out. I also watch a lot of TV, from anime to garbage reality TV and anything in between.

Balancing real life with porn life can be very challenging. How do you plan to handle that?

It’s quite the challenge indeed and definitely a struggle for me at times. I try very hard to keep my personal and professional lives separate, but I think the challenging part is that my porn persona isn’t really a persona, it’s just a side of me I don’t share on my personal channels where my family and straight friends follow me. Even picking a stage name was like pulling teeth because I never thought I would have to move away from my AIM-style Twitter handle, @awkwardchiguy. The other big risk is that I do work in corporate America so there’s always that worry of getting caught, especially since I am job hunting right now. To be honest, though, I think I’m over that fear. It’s none of my employer’s concern what I do in my free time and I think society at large is starting to shift to a more sex-positive culture. I mean in a few years our next president could have nudes on the internet somewhere. So far, I think I’ve been doing pretty well at the balancing act but I know it’s just the beginning and only going to get more complicated from here on out. Like most things, I think it’s about time management and reevaluating priorities. While my OF/studio work is definitely a side hustle for me at the moment, I wouldn’t mind the freedom to work at my leisure in a more free-form business like the adult entertainment industry if all my needs were met.

What do you think makes a true "porn star"?

I think there are a few parts to what makes a true “porn star”. First, there’s brand recognition where fans/studios see you, instantly recognize you, and want to get/work with you. The second is work ethic. A true “porn star” is someone who’s constantly working to improve themselves either physically or with the director’s/fan feedback, and shows up on time ready to do the work or for OF, is regularly putting out content and keeping fans engaged. Lastly, I think confidence is the final piece. Anyone who comes to mind for me when I think “porn star” is someone who is confident in their sexuality but also in owning the spotlight and being personable/sincere.

Is Ryder Flynn going to become one? 

Good question. I hope so! Personally, I don’t ever start something without the expectation to do my best and be one of the best to ever do it. That said, I’ve got quite a ways to go from being a true “porn star”. While I think I have solid brand recognition for a beginner, there is still much to learn and navigate in this extremely saturated market. The same goes for work ethic. While I am definitely a hard worker, I am still a baby in this industry learning the ins and outs. I also know that I need to work on pushing out more content but that comes down to me finding a better balance between my day job, porn work, and personal time, which can all feel overwhelming. Confidence is the piece of the pie that I think I need to work on most. While I am very confident in my abilities and my sexuality, I can be very shy when the spotlight is on me and I know the fans/studio would like me to open up more to show off my personality in addition to my assets.
