LGBTQ Rights Slipping Fast, Drag Queens Banned, Is Harry Potter Back?, NY Times Trans Fail
I’m your Gay News Guy – this is the news, casual, sassy, unfiltered, and a little tipsy. Ok here’s today’s LGBTQ news as I see it!
This last week public university students in Florida planned a ‘Stand for Freedom’ statewide walkout to protest Republican Governor Ron DeSantis’ political attacks on the LGBTQ community. Back in January, DeSantis demanded 12 universities hand over information on students that were being diagnosed with gender dysphoria, receiving hormone replacement, going through gender-affirming surgeries, or other trans-related treatments. As of now, 6 universities complied. Wow, Ron, it really seems you are obsessed with getting into trans people’s pants. Fetish much?
In some shocking news for our community, Tennessee has officially become the first US state to ban drag performances. This, of course, is a huge blow and could spark a nationwide movement. Not only does this sexualize and criminalize drag, but it also can have an effect on any public Pride parade or celebration. Also, in Maryland, the Proud Boys showed up and intimidated LGBTQ supporters at a drag queen story hour, to the point that people walked away hurt. No arrests were made even though it was caught on camera. Nice, good work, police! It seems we are going backward with each week that passes. Now is the time to get involved, find out what is happening in your state, and how you can get involved to fight back. Have you ever seen a drag queen fight? It’s unreal and yes, they will kick your ass…in heels! So put on your best lashes and lets GO!
New York Times, you got some explaining to do. 10,000 and growing New York Times readers have joined a coalition asking the paper to stop printing misinformation about trans people, meet with trans community leaders, and hire trans writers and editors. This comes after an alarming series of articles that are clearly anti-trans. Rumor has it that The New York Times is also threatening any employee who speaks out against their trans coverage. The New York Times' response? Crickets. Sorry, they probably can’t hear anything over their bigotry.
7.2% of the nation is LGBTQ, according to the latest Gallup Poll. This is double what it was a year ago. Bisexuals lead the pack with 58.2% of that number. The Poll also reports that 20% of Generation Z, ages 19 to 26, identify as something other than heterosexual. The next generation is feeling more comfortable with coming out and/or identifying as something other than heterosexual. Let’s go gays, we aren’t doing recruiting! More brunches, more drag shows, more glitter, more Prides! We will not stop until politics stop trying to oppress us, or until Chris Evans comes out as bi. I’m joking, don’t cancel me.
Ok here’s today’s MOVIE news as I see it!
WHAT IN MY HARRY POTTER IS GOING ON? Ok, so rumors have resurfaced that Warner Bros is looking to adapt the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child into a film, and they have plans to expand the Potter universe – maybe a TV show, who knows? Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) said he’d come back if everyone else does. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson said they aren’t ready to return to the Potterverse…and we know that everyone is mad at J.K. Rowling for her anti-trans comments. So who knows what’s really happening with another Potter film? BUT! To add fire to the fuel, Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood, the whimsical, crazy girl in the Potter films, who once denounced Rowling’s trans statements, is now supporting her, thanking her for “amplifying the voices of detransitioners.” WHAT? Expecto Fagatronum…poof, be gone bitch!
Warner Bros has greenlit more Lord of the Rings films! No word yet if Peter Jackson will be back to helm any of the new projects. An animated Lord of the Rings film is already in production on its way. By the power of Sauron, please don’t make it like the Amazon Lords of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV show. YAWNNNN! I fell asleep faster than my foot in yoga.
Cocaine Bear is getting amazing reviews, and it is just what you would expect – camp, coke, and lots of gore. I love films like this, it’s nice to remember that films can just be entertaining and don’t need to bore you or preach at you. Good ol’ fashion fun. Speaking of ol’ fashion fun, my ex’s name was cocaine bear. Where did the myth come from that cocaine makes you skinny? Gurlll…
Oh, Disney, take a vacation. Lilo & Stitch will be getting a live-action remake and they just cast Zach Galifianakis. I love Lilo & Stitch, and I love Zach, but do I love Disney’s live-action remakes? Um….no? Pinocchio? Lion King? Girl, you don’t need to reboot everything. Let’s take a break from reboots unless it’s for my diet, my credit score, or my love life.
Ok, a reboot I’m actually looking forward to. Arachnophobia is super close to being redone. Loved the original film, has a cult following and it would just be another FUN movie. Maybe it should be a Charlotte’s Web crossover…that’s a movie that needs to happen! Sorry, Wilbur…Charlotte’s coming for ya! Bwahahaha!
Do good things come in threes? Well, we have Venom 3 coming…we have Wayne’s World 3 being rumored…and a third Hellboy movie being made. Maybe all good things DON’T come in threes, like that last threesome I was invited to. Wah wahhhhh!
