You'd expect a movie called Femme about a British drag queen plotting vengeance would be campy and full of no-nonsense lines of dialogue where our leading lady slays the day away, but the new trailer for just this movie has dropped and it appears to be anything but that!
Femme tells the story of a badass London drag queen named Aphrodite Banks, played by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits, Generation). When she steps out of a club one night to smoke a cigarette, she's attacked in a hate crime by some local assholes for being Queer. The leader of the group is a piece of human garbage named Preston, played by a menacing-looking George MacKay (1917).
Feeling broken both physically and mentally following the attack, Jules is all but ready to drop her last dip and leave her wig on the nightstand. Then she sees someone at a gay sauna she never expected to see: Preston. Her attacker is a miserable, self-loathing closet case. Preston doesn't recognize him out of his Aphrodite drag, which gives Jules the perfect way into Preston's closeted life while he plots his vengeance.
The movie looks dark, disturbing, and somehow slightly sexy? The makers of Femme have said it will tackle “conventional ideas of sexuality, masculinity, patriarchy, and identity.” In an interview with Variety, the filmmakers said, “the seed of Femme came from our desire to flip the classic hyper-masculinity of the neo-noir thriller on its head. By putting a Queer protagonist at the heart of our revenge story, we aimed to put our own stamp on a genre that we love but from which we have often felt excluded.”
Femme is based on a short film of the same name by directors Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping. This marks their feature debut, but the short film version (which starred different actors) debuted last year at the prestigious SXSW Festival and was nominated for a BAFTA. The movie makes its international debut on February 19th at the Berlin Film Festival.
