Drag Queen Spotlight: Halle Moon talks Tipping, Smelly Queens, and Drag Inspiration

DRAG QUEEN SPOTLIGHT

LA drag queen Halle Moon as a green fairy.

Hello, good morning, and hi! I'm back this week with another Drag Queen Spotlight!! This week we are getting to know Halle Moon. She's an amazing performer based in LA. We've gotten to work together a few times, and she is a hoot and a pleasure to work with! When you see Halle live, you're going to get body, face, hair, beauty, sex, elegance, everything! She's a little alternative, a little camp, and a lot of glamour! You can catch her twirling at venues all over Downtown LA, the Inland Empire, or everywhere really. I was so excited to do this interview with her! She's so fun and amazing, so be sure to follow her on Instagram, and check out her answers below!

How did you get your drag name?

I began as Eclectra because I thought it suited my eclectic interests. However, that name does not roll off the tongue of a drunken host in the slightest. Then came Halfaxa, from an old Grimes album that I got stoned out of my mind to once. The same issue with this name as the last, so for simplicity's sake, Halle was born. And Moon came simply put because she’s definitely not from Earth!

How long have you been doing drag?

I’ve been playing in drag since around 2018, fresh off of my HS graduation and buzzing with a desire to do something different. I began to get a little more serious about it, however, around 2021.

When is your birthday? How old are you?

I was born unto the noon moon on in May of the year 2000. Shorthand math tells the doll that I’m 22 in human.

Relationship status?

Why? Do you want a kiss? Okay sure, meet me out back after this…

What was your first time in drag like?

Oh, dear god. That’s all there is to say. Well, not really. The first song I ever bounced around to was Yma Sumac’s “Malambo No. 1” at 340 Nightclub in Pomona, CA. I wore a busted little black dress with some chunky black pleasers that have yet to see the light of day since. She was terrible! But the catch is, she still had the time of her life even if she didn’t have the slightest clue.

What made you want to start drag?

Like a large majority of entertainers my age, RuPaul’s Drag Race had a bit of a hand in inspiring me to take on the craft myself.

Who inspires your drag (celebrities, other queens, etc.)?

I feel like I have an ever-growing list of inspirations when it comes to drag. It started with Amy Winehouse and Grimes, but has migrated into new territories such as Crystal Waters and En Vogue. Some local legends that I find myself noting major inspiration from on the daily are icons such as Jackie Beat, Big Dee, Psychadella, and Delta Work, all powerhouses of the drag world.

Favorite song/artist to lip sync to?

As of late, the song that really gets me going would have to be "Lick It" by 20 Fingers. It just makes me wanna shake my cha-cha’s, and I’m at peace with that.

Have you ever hooked up in drag?

As a trans doll, I find the line between Halle and my personal self is rather thin when it comes to the presentation. The only real difference is some glitter and an extra pair of tights. The alcohol also blurs the hours following 12 am, so let’s just assume yes.

What’s your favorite thing about drag?

The heels! They’re usually one of the first things I get into when preparing because they light the candles on my cake.

What are your hobbies outside of drag?

Outside of drag, I’m obsessed with rolodexing as many TV and film lines as I can.  Basically, my hobby is that I’m a couch potato. Deal with it.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve witnessed in a dressing room?

The meaty tuck of Ms. Jenny Tonic.

Biggest pet peeve about working with other drag queens?

I’ve seen bottles of perfume go for as cheap as 99¢ that smell better than a designer brand, so for the love of some typa god, there is no reason to walk around smelling like a litter box and mayo.

Biggest pet peeve about audiences in nightclubs?

Look. I’m already dancing for a dollar. Do ya really feel the need to play with the dollar like a Turkish ice cream vendor to place the cherry on top for me? Each interaction matters and we’ve gotta move on to the next hoe, so please, remember it’s our show, not YOURS.

Any advice for someone wanting to start drag?

Just do it! Why is the lash not already glued to your eyebrow? Why are your toes not already covered in corns? Baby the best way to start is by doing just that, hitting GO! Go support your local drag shows, mingle, don’t be shy because mostly everyone else is too (even if they’re convinced they’re not), and never lose sight of why you began. It will guide your entire journey.
