What do corsets, jockstraps, and feathers all have in common? Sam Smith looks amazing in all of them and doesn't give a fuck if you have an opinion on that. After all...they're not here to make friends, as they remind you with the title of their new song...wait for it...wait for itttttt....."I'm Not Here to Make Friends."

The song is part of their newest album, Gloria, and it's truly the official step in the musician's career as an unapologetically non-binary Queer artist. In the video, Smith radiates absolute joy and beauty, and the confidence they exude smacks you in the face in the most wonderful way possible.
They arrive on a fucking golden helicopter, wearing a massive head-to-toe pink feathered gown, over Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", while a massive Disney-esque shooting star crosses the screen, and then shifting to audio of RuPaul saying, "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an amen?!" I want you to read that entire statement again, and then I want you to clean up all the glitter that no doubt just exploded from your eyes, nose, and mouth.

And to be clear...this opening outfit and drama are just the first of many that unfold over the four-minute video. They give us black ball gowns; they give us heart-shaped assless pants; they give us nipple covers; they give us Marie Antoinette at a Queer orgy. In other words, they give us everything they want to give us, just as they want to give it; you can accept it or not, but if it's the latter then just get the fuck out of their (and our) way.
At a basic level, the song is ultimately about finding someone to hook up with at the club. But at a deeper level, this song is the pure embodiment of sex positivity and love of self. And if there's one this website loves, it's sex positivity and Queer love. If you haven't seen the video, treat yourself to 4 minutes of absolute joy, beauty, and self-love.
