Pumping Up with AJ Sloan: DEEP BREATHING Specific to Your Exercise

Gay porn star AJ Sloan's bi-weekly column on health & fitness.

Breathing. We love it so much that we don’t even realize we are doing it. But are we giving enough attention to the way that we are breathing? When it comes to exercise, it is vital to properly breathe to maximize that blood flow to where it is needed the most. It may be International Fetish Day, but no, we are not talking about your cock. Not this time, anyway. We are talking about your muscles, you dirty cum nuggets.

Many people have the tendency of pausing their breath during a set. This is an involuntary way of stabilizing the torso to obtain support and strength from our core. This is also a huge fail and may land you with injuries such as muscle cramps, hernias, and looking like an idiot in public. Our muscles want and need that good ol’ oxygen. There are various methods of breathing depending on what type of activity you are performing that will optimize oxygen to your muscles and result in the sick gainz that you’re thirsting for.

When strength training, proper breathing will give you more control of the movement, enabling you to go heavier on the weight. How should we be breathing while weightlifting, you ask? Well, babe, let me tell you! Inhale during the eccentric motion of your exercise (lowering the dumbbell in a curl or going down into a squat) and exhale that air during the concentric phase (pushing up in a push-up or pulling up in a pull-up).

Proper breathing will also let you know when you are going overboard with the weights you choose. If you are pausing your breath or excessively grunting, you’re likely f*cking up. Not breathing is never good and nobody likes the obnoxiously loud grunter at the gym. Best lower the amount of weight to an amount that allows you to carry out the movement while fluidly breathing and not a non-douchebag volume level. Leave the grunting for the bedroom.

For all of my runners out there, breathe from your abdomen. Many tend to only breathe from the top of the chest. Don’t do that. Fill your entire core with air through deep breaths. This will result in more energy for longer runs. If you have a tendency for rhythmic breathing, try inhaling through the nose for one count and exhaling through the mouth for a count of two.

One of my favorite times to hone in on my breath is during my ab workout. During a core workout, many people tend to pause their breath during the concentric phase (while crunching inward). Mistake. Maintain your breathing and maintain the movement. This will allow you to stabilize your core. When you exhale, push every last drop of air out from your core, squeezing your ribs toward your spine. When you inhale, relax that gorgeous little pelvic floor of yours. Doing so will strengthen it, resulting in harder hardons for years to cum.

Breathing properly while exercising will carry out into all facets of daily life. You will feel more energetic and attentive. You will also find yourself feeling less anxious and stressed. Let’s not take our breath for granted. Now take a deep breath and carry on. As that late Tanya McQuoid uttered with her last breath, “You’ve got this!”
