Did you find gay porn or did it find you?
I found it, I guess. I was 28 years old and frustrated with my acting career not being what I had hoped. I felt stuck. I felt like I had no control over my destiny, like the success of my career was based solely on whether or not the people behind the audition table liked me, and I hated that. So I decided to do something drastic that made me feel like I was in charge! Like I was the boss! Anything that anyone else thought or had to say didn’t matter. I said, “Fuck it, I’m going to do gay porn.” I sent my pictures to like 5 different studios, and when I heard back from 2 of them, I decided to go through with it.
You are quite the versatile individual, can you tell us about your involvement with music and acting?
I moved to New York in 2009 to pursue theatre and record and release my own music. I’ve had a blast doing it. I’ve done two national tours, sang on cruise ships for a couple years, and performed at lots of nightlife and corporate events. I’ve danced in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for 5 years, in an SNL skit, worked at several regional theatres around the country, and independently released several singles and remixes EPs on Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud. Entertainment is what I love, and where I thrive, I feel like I’m fulfilling my purpose.
In regards to bedroom scenes, which is more fun… topping or bottoming?
I’m new to being vers. Topping comes more naturally, but I’m starting to enjoy bottoming more. I just have to learn how to relax.
Favorite feature a man?
Calves
Favorite feature of yourself?
Teeth.
You have quite the impressive adult content portfolio. Do you find sexual expectations high in your personal encounters?
Sometimes. Or guys often expect me to be exactly how I am in my videos, which isn't too far off. The sexual energy I have as Andre is pretty much the same in real life. The difference is certain positions I only do on camera, or the illusion porn perpetuates that sex is nonstop without any sort of break. In real life, I take breaks during sex; I'm not picking you up and fucking you in the air for 10 mins straight. That's a movie that's been edited. That's not real. I'm also not as verbal in real life, at least not when I'm topping. I'm very vocal as a bottom, but I like to concentrate when I top. Coming up with a bunch of cheesy, unnecessary one-liners makes me feel like I'm in an improv acting class. In real life, I'm focusing on fucking you well. If I'm concerned with being verbal, then I'm gonna be distracted from dicking you down properly.
Being from the South but now in NY, how has your personal & social life changed since doing adult content?
I used to be a go-go boy and still work in nightlife occasionally. It's been one of my main side hustles since moving to New York. Since becoming an adult entertainer, I get to host certain events occasionally instead of being one of the go-gos. That didn't happen before. I get messages on apps where guys say they like my scenes or think it's cool that I do porn and musical theatre simultaneously. That's always really sweet to hear. People will stare on the subway, at the gym, or at a Broadway audition but hardly ever come up to me and say anything. I think I look familiar to people, but they're never exactly sure where from, and they don't wanna walk up to me and be like, "Hey, do you do porn?" and be wrong. Growing up in the South, I constantly tried to hide my gayness the best I could. But I don't hide that anymore, regardless of where I am. Sometimes I'm extra gay on purpose, lol. I think I do that to make up for the lost time.
You recently released remixes of your first two songs “Can’t Get Next 2 U” & “Shirtless”. The original mixes are seeping in '90s production and influence. How did you approach your re-recordings?
Yeah, the '90s/early 2000s pop culture heavily influences everything I do, especially R&B and Pop music from those eras. I am a product of my generation, no doubt. So there will probably always be an essence of that time noticeably represented in my music. But my mindset is generally the same whenever I'm going into the studio to record. I like to create records that are flirty, fun, and enjoyable. And when listening to the lyrics, I can only hope people find meaning in these records.
What is next for Valton? What is Andre Donovan working on right now?
Who knows? I try not to add unnecessary pressures or timelines to my life. That benefits no one. But I'm always working on 3-4 different projects, usually the most often being theatre, porn, and music. Constantly auditioning and self-promoting. Content creating, of course. I'll be performing in a limited engagement of a theatre show I worked on earlier this year called The Village. I play a go-go boy, lol. I'm excited for people to see The Swords. I love working with Marc MacNamara. His movies always look good, so I'm excited to see everything from when we all filmed in Paris. I'm still writing, recording songs, and connecting with other producers. I've released a new song or remix every year since November 2015, and I will continue that trend this upcoming year. My main objective for 2023, however, is to be happy. Be happy, worry way less about other people's opinions of me, and stop compromising my boundaries so much. We set our boundaries for a reason. I need to do better at abiding by those boundaries and remembering why I set them in the first place.
Who have been some of your favorite scene partners?
So many. I’ve been really lucky to work with some really great, really hot models. XL, Tyson Rush, Jake Waters, Sean Xavier, Arad Winwin, Reign, Jonathan Miranda, Adam Ramzi, Jacen Zhu, Beau Butler, Beaux Banks, Ruslan Angelo, Dean Young.
If someone really wants to get to know you and what makes you tick which production would you recommend to them?
The musical Once On This Island. It’s literally my favorite. It was the first play I ever did. I was 14 yrs old and I was cast as Agwe, the god of water. But I connected most with the lead character Ti Moune, the goddess of love Erzulie, and the parents Ton Ton Julian and Mama Euralie.
