Next Door Studios’ Jeremy Babcock Talks the Secret to Directing Great Porn, Casting Stars & the Future of the Adult Industry

BREAKING NEWS

Jeremy Babcock is the man behind the curtain, the great and powerful Oz, over at Alpha Studio Group. Jeremy is the Chief Creative Officer at ASG, overseeing the incredible content at Active Duty, Next Door Studios, Rod’s Room, Pride Studios, and Disruptive Films. Imagine? This one guy helps create some of the gay adult industry's hottest, most successful scenes across these popular brands and sites. In this exclusive Cybersocket Q&A, Jeremy tells us about his journey into porn, his time working as a gay porn director, what they look for in casting, and his excitement for Alpha's newest site, Rod's Room.

Can you work through what your work as Chief Creative Officer entails? How hands-on are you on what is produced on each site? My "duties" are hard to pin down and seem to change from week to week, but the best way to sum it up would be...for most of the brands under the Alpha Studio Group umbrella, I have some form of oversight over the creative direction of each brand as a whole. Different projects vary, but for the most part, I am involved with or oversee teams that handle the content scheduling & planning, recruiting & casting, concepts & scripting, pre-production, logistics for the various production teams, post-production (specifically reviewing & giving feedback on edited content), and even social media & marketing. In short, I follow every piece of content that we release from the early planning through creation and ultimately even marketing.

How do you describe the differences between what Alpha Studio Group does on each site? The general goal for each site is to find an audience and then keep that audience as happy as possible.  We love making content, so the more variety we can release, the better we can reach all corners of the gay porn-viewing audience. Fun jock-next-door content at Next Door Studios, masculine military-type men on Active Duty, the hottest and most sexual performers in the industry on Rod's Room, high-level acting and edgy storytelling on Disruptive, etc. While one big site would be easier to maintain, it's these different niches that really give us the ability to express our creativity in a variety of ways, and show off the different talents of our crews and performers.

What excites you most about the newest site, Rod's Room? I LOVE the Rod's Room content. It's just the pure essence of porn. No stories, no niche themes. This site is all about finding the hottest guys we can find to have the best sex they can have. The photography looks like it's out of a magazine and the models look like MODELS on this brand. It's all about eye candy and letting the models show why they're fan favorites.  Michael and Siouxsie have worked really hard to make the guys look amazing and make sure the chemistry is off the charts. As more and more people get to see the content, I think a lot of people are really going to be drawn to this brand.

How do you choose which models will go on which sites? We work really hard to play to the desires of each audience. We try to keep each site looking unique and have its own core roster of models, but sometimes you've got guys that just fit EVERYWHERE and each audience loves them. Brandon Anderson, Roman Todd, Jayden Marcos, those guys are just universally popular and fun to watch in any type of pairing or theme.

What are the three biggest things you look for when casting performers? Shout out to our Casting Team.  They work HARD supporting all our various brands, and Alpha Studio Group wouldn't be what it is today without the hard work Melissa & Sarah are doing in the background to find new models and keep the existing talent happy and ready to return.

  1. Always the classic 3-point system.  Face/Body/Dick.  At the most basic level, we'll struggle to get traction with a model who doesn't have 2 of the 3.
  2. 90% of the time we look at their Twitter.  A Twitter account is probably the most effective sales tool a model has.  Do they have a big following?  What's their media tab look like?  Are people paying attention?  What is it about THIS model that people seem to like?
  3. With all our brands, my top question is usually "where does he fit?"  At any given time we need actors, muscles, masculinity, twinks, hunks, and daddies.  It changes from week to week and our scope is huge the last 2 years.

What porn stars and studios were really influential to you before getting into the business? Long story short, if a member of my college fraternity hadn't pulled up a Miami Studios twink scene as a joke one day, I might still be a sexually stunted country boy in Montana. It took me 20+ years to have that light switch go off in my head, like "hey, I kinda like that"... and the rest is history.  Haha.

Honestly, I've never been that brand loyal as a consumer. I'd just be attracted to certain models and track them across the various sites they might have worked for. I guess that's why I've never been opposed to mixing our favorite models across a variety of sites. It's fun to see them in the different themes and scenarios.

How did you start in the adult industry? Prior to four years ago, I was an editor, cutting commercials for an ad agency. In the process of preparing to make the jump to a freelance Creative Director path, I picked up some edit work through a friend at NDS. Ironically, I assume it was my critique of the content that ultimately got me an offer to join them full-time. I talked so much shit, I somehow got a job... go figure. Six months later I was running around a shoot house grabbing BTS and interviewing models for our social feeds. By the end of a year on set, I had directed 15+ scenes and had my hands on about every part of what we were doing as a company. I've continued to open my big mouth and get additional duties stacked on ever since.

What's one thing most people wouldn't realize about directing porn? I could go on and on... haha. One thing I don't think people realize is how many variables there are on any given day. Do the models have chemistry? Can your guys get hard? Is the booty clean? Is your bottom even able to bottom today? It's truly a miracle when you see a high-energy porn scene with two rock-hard models who clearly like each other having an epic flip-fuck. Walden Woods & Conrad Parker are miracle workers!

If you could pay any celeb big bucks to make their porn debut on Next Door Studios, who would it be and why? I mean..if we're going G4P, I feel like Chris Hemsworth or Channing Tatum would be pretty epic. But if I'm keeping it gay, I think Lil Nas X would be a blast to work with.

What do you think the future of porn will be? Eventually, I'd love to find the magic recipe that combines the quality and consistency of the studio business model with the individual empowerment and direct monetization of the fan site model. Both sides have their strengths and their weaknesses, but I'd love to see a future that represents a more collaborative effort between the two. Some sort of hybrid will be the future, as soon as somebody can figure out a way to combine them.
