Plug-In to the Week’s News Recap: 5 Political Headlines You Should Know

BREAKING NEWS

This week was a whirlwind across the board. By now, everyone has heard Roe v. Wade was overturned, but from sodomy laws to Trump strangling a Secret Service agent, here is our look at five key news headlines you might have missed this week.

Texas Sodomy Laws Challenged

This week, the Attorney General of Texas said he would be willing to defend Texas' anti-sodomy laws if the case is revisited. In 2003, the 1976 law banning sodomy was overturned, being deemed unconstitutional and infringing upon private citizens 14th Amendment rights. The same precedent was used for Roe, which is why conservatives are now feeling emboldened to re-criminalize anal and oral sex (yes...***sodomy means oral, too***).

Monkeypox Cases Triple in Two Weeks

Monkeypox, though generally not fatal, has most predominantly impacted the gay community. And right now, it looks as though Europe is the epicenter of the Monkeypox outbreak with the case numbers tripling since June 15th. In a statement released on Friday by World Health Organization Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, wrote, "Today, I am intensifying my call for governments and civil society to scale up efforts in the coming weeks and months to prevent monkeypox from establishing itself across a growing geographical area. Urgent and coordinated action is imperative if we are to turn a corner in the race to reverse the ongoing spread of this disease."

"Don't Say Gay" Law Officially Goes Into Effect on Friday

Florida's famous "Don't Say Gay" officially went into effect on Friday and it immediately had teachers and students alike feeling angry, confused, and scared. Confusion seems to be one of the biggest factors here, as there are reports from teachers saying they've been instructed privately never to wear any clothing with rainbows on it, not to display any pictures of their same-sex partners, and must remove all "Safe Space for LGBTQ+" stickers. To counter that, the Orange County Public School's legal department sent this statement clarifying that those thing are only vaguely true and that teachers should still intervene in anti-LGBTQ+ bullying. Oh good! Nevermind! EVERYTHING IS GREAT!

At Least 23 African Migrants Die At Spanish Border

As reported on Wednesday by the Human Rights Watch, at least 23 African immigrants have been murdered at the Spanish border of Melilla and Morocco. In addition to the 23 deaths, at least another 76 were injured, as over 2,000 people tried to climb the fence between Morocco and Melilla. Michelle Bachelet, The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, issued statements calling on the leaders of both countries to figure out how such a tragedy could occur.

Trump Attacks Secret Service Agent, and More Revelations

As part of the investigation into the January 6th Insurrection on the nation's capital, the top aide to former Presidential Chief of Staff, Cassidy Hutchinson, testified this week with a number of bombshell revelations about her former boss. Not the least of those is that that on January 6th, disgraced President Donald Trump threw a screaming fit in the Presidential limo, at one point lunging for not only the steering wheel, but reportedly also the neck of one of the Secret Service agent's whose job was to protect him. More specifically, Trump reportedly put hands on the chief of his security detail. Yeesh. Here is the moment Twitter thinks they captured Drumpf's lunge for the steering wheel on January 6th. At one point the door is even seemingly forced open before being pulled back shut. Take a look:
