Trailer Review: Harry Styles Goes Gay in The New Queer Movie “My Policeman”

BISEXUAL

Last week, the trailer dropped for Harry Styles' new Queer romance film, My Policeman, where he will be starring as a closeted gay policeman in 1950s Great Britain. Named after the novel of the same name by author Bethan Roberts, the film tells the story of Styles as local policeman Tom, his school teacher wife Marion (Emma Corrin), and the museum curator with whom he falls in love, Patrick (David Dawson).

Amazon Studios, who is producing the film, has kept the steamy secrets of the movie very tight-lipped, but the trailer decidedly gives us glances into the tension that will no doubt need to be broken. I am optimistic that the movie will be as sexy as I hope, in no small part due to the fact that Styles is notoriously open about his pro-Queer worldview, as well as the fact that he is essentially Queer himself. He doesn't go so far as to label himself with that word, but that's an intentional choice, versus a lazy Queer-baiting (cc: Andrew Garfield). In an exclusive interview with Better Homes & Gardens, Styles said of his sexuality, "I've been really open with it with my friends, but that's my personal experience; it's mine." Continuing, "The whole point of where we should be heading, which is toward accepting everybody and being more open, is that it doesn't matter, and it's about not having to label everything, not having to clarify what boxes you're checking." Cheers to that Harry.

My Policeman doesn't just tell the story of 1950s Great Britain, though. The movie will also flash forward to the 1990s, to show how the characters have grown and changed, how their sexuality has evolved and adapted with the changing decades, and the long-term impact of a sexually oppressive society. The older versions of the characters are going to be played by Linus Roach (Tom), Gina McKee (Marion), and Rupert Everett (Patrick). This will also be another chance for us to see potentially more sexually adventurous characters, emboldened by the changing attitudes of the 90s.

This movie isn't Styles' first time on the silver screen. Putting aside his theatrically-released concerts, Styles was also in 2017's Dunkirk from director Christopher Nolan. He is also slated to star in a second movie this fall in Don't Worry Darling from director Olivia Wilde, who is incidentally Styles' real-life girlfriend.

My Policeman debuts in theaters on October 21st before becoming streamable on Prime Video November 4th. I can't wait to see this movie, and I'm really excited for the era of Harry Styles the actor. Here is the trailer for you to enjoy!
