Liza’s Lads: The Men of Liza Minnelli Movies

CELEBS

The last Academy Awards was quite the shit show, but at least it ended on a happy note with two of our greatest Oscar-winning icons coming together, Liza Minnelli and Lady Gaga.

Every Gay has his favorite diva. For some it’s Gaga, others it’s Cher, maybe Madonna, and, of course, there’s always the Barbra. For this gay, it’s Liza with a Z. Of course, there’s Liza’s unmatched talent as a singer, dancer, and actress but then there’s her humane nature to all. “When I sing for you all my pain goes away” Sigh…

Like all our great Divas, Liza has had her share of male relationships on and off the screen. Let’s look at some of Liza’s Lads:

Peter Allen

The Australian singer/songwriter Peter Allen was Liza’s first husband. Introduced by Liza’s mother, Judy “Goddess” Garland, the closeted Peter was unable to keep his true self a secret and came out as one of the gayest of the gays in the 1970s and '80s. It’s a testament to both Peter and Liza that they remained dear friends before his passing of AIDS in 1992. He would even write the Oscar winning theme song from one of Liza’s best loved films, Arthur, in 1981:

Michael York

Liza’s leading man in her most famous film, Cabaret, this hunky British gent played the bisexual young writer who falls in love with singer Sally Boles (Liza) only to compete with her for the attention of a wealthy German aristocrat. This film remains a favorite of the LGBTQ+ community and Liza deservedly won her Oscar for Best Actress for her performance.

Robert DeNiro

In her second great musical of the '70s, the underrated New York, New York, Liza plays a band singer who deals with personal and professional conflicts with an edgy saxophonist played by Robert DeNiro. Bob looks so great in those 1940s suits! It’s no wonder Liza reportedly had a brief fling with both Bob and director Martin Scorsese.

Burt Reynolds

In the 1970s, Burt was the top leading man in movies and Liza made not one, but two films with him. Lucky Lady and Rent-a-Cop might not have been great critical and commercial successes, but there’s no denying their chemistry...and Burt sure looks great in a bathtub.

Dudley Moore

Ok, he’s a little plane to look at, but Liza’s leading man in Arthur and its (not THAT bad) sequel was a most lovable and hilarious drunk. If nothing else, he was also a billionaire!

What are some of your favorite of Liza’s lads or Liza moments?
