This movie is the first gay romantic comedy by a major studio, about 50 years late, but he we will take the win! Bros is written by the talented and multi-hyphenate gay Hollywood darling Billy Eichner, who will also star in the film. Alongside Eichner you will recognize Bowen Yang, Luke Macfarlane, Jai Rodriguez, Matthew Wilkas, and a bunch of other gay actors…all making history in the first major studio film with an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast! The release of Bros will also make Eichner the first openly gay man to ever write and star in his own major studio film—did you ever think you’d see so many ‘firsts’ for a cast of gays outside the first-time-with-a-guy ‘straight’ dude porn scenes?
The trailer shows Eichner playing his usual character, a curmudgeon gay who borders on annoying but somehow still manages to have tons of flings with attractive gay men (if you’re unfamiliar, just watch Difficult People on Hulu). Some highlights in this unrated trailer include a saucy NSFW glimpse at a fourgy, plenty of guy on guy action, and some super-hot supporting character roles.
The trailer also hints that the plot may be more than a raunchy gay rom-com. I think the idea here is to find the happy middle. Not quite as campy and X-rated as the Eating Out movies but also not as cookie cutter and bland as the most recent selection of straight couple rom-coms. It is a big task, but based on his perspective, experience, and background, I think Billy Eichner is the perfect voice to tell a gay love story that actually represents gay culture, both the good and fun parts, and the parts of which we may not be so proud.
Check out the trailer below and if you like what you see, make sure you buy your tickets to see it in theaters! This is our shot to show everyone that gay characters and storylines are universal and can be enjoyed by we the queers and our fellow allies. Can’t wait to see how the Bible Belt boycotts this one!
