In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, 20-year-old Canadian heartthrob Shawn Mendes revealed how he feels about being a gay thirst trap and the pressure he feels to overcompensate by hanging around more women in public.
"In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone -- like a girl -- in public, to prove to people that I'm not gay," he told the mag. "Even though in my heart I know that it's not a bad thing. There's still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me."
Just a few months after splitting with his ex-girlfriend Hailey Baldwin (now Hailey Beiber), Mendes finds himself at his wits' end with all the rumors regarding his sexuality. He's clearly hot as fuck, but that doesn't give anyone the right to assume his orientation or treat him a certain way because of who they feel he should be attracted to.
The rumors that he's gay have sparked a fight within himself that shouldn't ever happen to anyone - regardless of fame, fortune, or anything else.
Mendes talked about how much he beat himself up after letting his friend Taylor Swift post a video of her putting glittery eye makeup on his face backstage at a show.
"I felt sick," he said. "I was like, 'F**k, why did I let her post that?' I just fed the fire that I'm terrified of."
He's working hard to come to terms with his own mannerisms and the way he portrays himself to others, which sadly only help the rumors spread. "Maybe I am a little more feminine -- but that's the way it is," he said. "That's why I am me."
Moral of the story: Swoon over Shawn Mendes as much as you like, but trying to label him as something he's not is not only wrong, it's clearly destructive to hiw own self-esteem. Let's just enjoy him from a distance. And don't worry, he still loves us.
