RuPaul is the most famous drag queen in the world. Three decades of performing in drag, making music, writing books, and even creating a makeup line have helped the living legend make a mark on LGBTQ+ culture that can never be taken away.
In his book, GuRu, Mama Ru talks about how he came to be the person he is today. He's more than a drag queen - he's a well-rounded, confident, caring individual that uses the lessons he has learned to help the rest of us not fuck everything up so bad. Honestly, it's the best gift.
The creative mind behind RuPaul’s Drag Race also poses completely naked and drag-free in the book, which offers advice on everything from meditation to movies to make up.
RuPaul opens about how to avoid your saboteurs and empower yourself in life.
"Your saboteurs may have all that same creativity and power, too, and they may trick you into believing that you aren’t worth your value. But when I look out at the world, when I meet my fans, what I see is pure love and gorgeousness. So, what I hope that GuRu will do for you is help you see your own love and gorgeousness, too, and shut out the negativity and naysayers once and for all."
"I like to think of my body as my vehicle, my human machine," says RuPaul. "At this point, I have put a lot of miles on my vehicle. And sometimes, the wheel likes to turn a little bit to the left when it’s raining. Your body knows when there’s a storm a-brewing, when the vehicle needs a tune-up, and you can take that concept and apply it to every aspect of your life."
GuRu is basically a self-help book on steroids, and it really speaks to the LGBTQ+ community about a topic we haven't really been exposed to before: self-acceptance and embrace. This is one read I'm on board with.
