True story: The very first gay porn movie we ever saw was a circa 1983 William Higgins twink vehicle that was playing at the now-shuttered Gaiety in Times Square: we were so naive about the way dirty movie theaters worked that we actually called ahead to check the showtimes so we wouldn't miss anything. We can't even remember exactly which movie it was anymore (though we do recall that half its cast was wearing kneesocks), but we do remember what watching porn in an actual movie theater was like to this very day ... smoky air, scratchy seats, sticky floors and all. So as much as we later came to appreciate the convenience of VHS (and, later, DVD) technology, somehow watching smut still just isn't the same for us without the whirr of the projector in the background and the tang of disinfectant from the men's room wafting through the air.
Thankfully, though, AMG is giving us a taste of the old days with the rerelease of several Bob Mizer classics from the early 70s in newly remastered DVD versions. Aside from occasional private screenings at Mizer's California studio, the films on the two DVDs haven't been seen since they were first screened at Los Angeles' Park Theatre over forty years ago—and while they might seem tame compared to the no-holes-barred porn churned out by today's studios (they show "all but the point of penetration"), they're still a lot hotter for being so relatively innocent. All you need is a trench coat and some amyl nitrate and it's almost like you're sitting in the Park Theater again—minus the threat of police raids!
