Last month, several blogs reported "David" from ActiveDuty.com was a currently serving military man servicing military men. Gays went in a tizzy at the outing of someone who could fall victim to DADT insanity. Now David speaks for himself.
In an exclusive interview with Unzipped, David reveals he was not actively in the service at the time of the porn shoot. Whew! Case closed. He goes on to give an interesting glimpse into gay military life:
Were you openly gay/out to fellow service members?
I never hid who I was. If a fellow service member ever asked me point blank, I was very honest with them. It was important to me to break down the stereotypical image of a gay man. Most fellow Marines were very comfortable around me; I did my job to the best of my ability and never made any advances to co-workers.
It sounds like "don't ask, don't tell" is not a strictly enforced policy?
While I was never affected by the policy, I do know many that were, and it was always circumstantial. I know that there are a growing number of commanders that don't agree with the policy at all. It's my opinion that those who do ardently follow the policy to the letter do so for personal or religious reasons. I knew many service members that were as open as I was about their sexuality. Our sexual life was personal, but few see the need to lie about who they are.
David's encouraging comments make being gay in the military sound only slightly less annoying than a straight sports bar. What is annoying is that this soldier and his loaded rifle have no new porn work coming up. David, come make us stand at attention, sir!
