Print porn ain't dead yet. "Headmaster" is a surprisingly sexy new magazine that takes gay sex and turns it into fun smutty art. Don't run at the word "art;" the publication has plenty of jack-off material certain to stimulate both your heads. Let's look at the horniest images from the inaugural issues, and chat with the editors in an exclusive interview.
Just in time for Back to School, the concept of "Headmaster" is simple: the editors give various artists an erotically charged homework assignment, and whatever the artist sends back—in paintings, photography and prose—gets published in the magazine. For Issue 1, they asked pornstar Conner Habib to "write a true story of no more than 2,500 words about a specific experience that you have had in the porn industry." Conner returned with a hypnotic tale of the surreal double life lead by one of his gay-for-pay scene partners, Girth Brooks.
The full color periodical is handsomely packaged in full glossy color, with the class that would make nice coffee table decor. While inherently sexual (there's a spread of digital illustrations based on xTube titles), it's not crass. It's pornography for thoughtful art lovers looking for brains behind their smut; for horndogs looking for grittier jack-off material than the waxed and airbrushed phoniness of mainstream porn. The art critic-slash-porn hound inside us is already pre-cumming. Learn more about the magazine and how you can order issues for your own hot little hands by clicking here.
The editors—Matthew Lawrence, Jason Tranchida, and Matthew Underwood—answered a few of our questions:
In a landscape where the vast majority of men find their erotica
online, what made you decide to go the very risky print route?
Our interest in producing a print publication stemmed mainly from our
desire to spend less time in front of computer screens and to produce
an object that lasts longer than the time a browser tab stays open. We
also wanted to produce a print publication that would act as a
platform for some of the amazing artwork being produced right now.
Each issue features the work of roughly ten artists working in various
media. The juxtaposition of the artists' projects in a particular
issue is also very important to us–it contextualizes the work in a way
that isn't always evident in on-line publications.
How does Headmaster fit in in terms of other male pornography or erotica?
The work in Headmaster is assignment-based. We give assignments to
artists and writers to create original work for each issue. Where they
take their assignment is completely up to them. This creates an
element of surprise for us as publishers and we think this translates
to our readers as well. Our contributors also come from really diverse
backgrounds and explore ideas of masculinity and sexuality (if not
pornography or erotica directly). Conner Habib's story in Issue no. 1,
for example, explores a side of working in the porn industry that we
seldom get to see. We asked fiber artist Steven Frost to research
someone at the Leather Archives & Museum in Chicago, and his colorful
reproductions of homemade bondage gear are totally unlike anything
you'd see in a traditional porn magazine.
What is the message you're hoping to send out with the publication?
In the broadest sense, we want to tell people that there are some
amazing artists and writers around the world producing sexy,
provocative work. There's a dialogue that's going on (and has always
been going on actually) between the art world and the
pornography/erotica world, and Headmaster wants to be a vehicle for
this dialogue to take place.
