Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown Is Not Here For The ‘Over-Sexualized’ Gay Scene

Karamo Brown is something else (and not so much in a good way). In a recent interview with Gay Times, he spoke about how he truly feels when it comes to the gay community - specifically the dating apps and the "over-sexualized" culture. 

As one of the members from Netflix's Queer Eye reboot, Kamaro sees inside the LGBTQ community on a daily basis, and his experiences with others have molded his opinions and feelings toward certain aspects within it.

As far as dating apps are concerned, Karamo claims they are the worst. "I think they’re horrible. I do not own an app and never have. I think dating apps are keeping us apart," he said. He says they over-sexualize men and are more harmful than good for the community. 

"When you talk about the apps that we have, they usually encourage, ‘Send me a photo,’ which is very vague," he says. "My photo has nothing to do with the person I am, the dreams I have, the family I want to build, the family I’m from. We’re in a culture now where, if I don’t like you, I don’t have to get to know you, I just have to swipe left. How horrible is that?"

Karamo says he prefers meeting people at clubs or other public places.

"It’s much more fun," he says. "I can’t tell you the last time I met a couple who said, 'I met on Grindr or Scruff, and I’m in a long term relationship.' It just does not happen."

Have we become an "over-sexualized" community and culture? Or are we just being ourselves by ignoring the rules society tried to put in place? Are dating apps that destructive or are we just looking for an excuse to express our sexual desires as human beings?

Personally I don't see anything wrong with doing what you want, when you want, and with whomever you please. Let's focus more on empowerment and less on judgement. Perhaps Karamo could learn something, too.
