When word got out that Geoffrey Rush was going to be playing the eponymous King Lear at the Sydney Theatre Company, the average theatre-goer got excited by the possibility of seeing one of our greatest living actors take on an iconic role. When further word was released that he was to appear completely nude in the show, the theatre's website crashed.
According to Business Insider Australia (link below), the thought of seeing Rush's cock in person was too much for the servers to handle.
While people tried to score the chance to see Rush in action, in the nude, buying tickets became impossible when the site broke down, displaying this message:
“Our website is temporarily unavailable… we are experiencing high volumes of traffic due to the priority booking window opening today for 2015 Season Ticket bookings.”
Now, Rush has not explicitly stated that he will definitely get nude in the show, he certainly danced around the proposition last week in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald.
Rush, who will play Lear for the first time, has posed nude for STC's publicity images. But, he says, that was simply a way of "finding some kind of resonant emblem about the dimensions of the play that hopefully sells a subscription brochure". The need for his monarch to be bare-skinned will be decided when rehearsals start next year.
My personal favorite part of that interview is when Rush reveals that he studied at L'Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. "Jacques Lecoq taught me how to fall over, get slapped and be a failure."
Trying... so... hard... to... maintain... journalistic... integrity...
