11 Thoughts On New Bud Light Gay Wedding Ad

EDITORIAL FEATURES

Bud Light Commercial Featuring Gay Wedding

Bud Light recently rolled out an ad featuring a same-sex wedding starring Amy Schumer and Seth Rogen. If you've been to a gay pride event you probably have 14 rainbow flag Bud Light keychains, and the company states that it's actually been in the Pride game since 1995, when it had it's first gay-targeted print ad. With star power and a significant marketing push, however, the new commercial is reigniting interest in InBev's involvement in the gay community.

Props should go out to companies spreading the good gay word, and I understand we're still in a transitional phase where a heteronormative veneer is required to make national campaigns palatable to a large audience. With that said, we should still be allowed to think critically when we're pitched to.

Here are my thought (good, bad, and irreverent) while watching this gay Bud Light commercial:

1) Amy Schumer is kind of like girls on Sex and the City, where you assume she's a gay icon because she's sassy and sexually liberated, but then you remember all the lazy one dimensional gay characters saturated in stereotypes that she's created.

2) They're throwing a bouquet at a gay wedding.

3) All gay couples are well off, according to television.

4) Rich gay couples probably aren't serving Bud Light at their weddings.

5) Only five people are watching the grooms cut the cake.

4) I'm glad that the grooms are legitimately hot. Nonthreatening, asexual gay characters with no chemistry are done, *COUGH* Cam and Mitch *COUGH*. The guys in this ad go home and fuck each other.

5) They're throwing a bouquet at a gay wedding.

6) Greg is SUCH a gay guy name. It's like Jimmy.

7) It's interesting how the focus of the commercial is convincing the audience that gay weddings are okay. Seth Rogen says "Gay Weddings: They're just like any wedding," and we're then filled in on how approachable gay ceremonies are. This isn't good or bad, just interesting. It's like a PSA.

8) How much is Ellen getting paid for all this?

9) Which Seth Rogen movies have portrayed gays in a positive light? I'm sure there are some, I just don't really watch his movies.

10) If they do a lesbian one of these, I wonder if one of the brides will be wearing a white power suit. Then we'll know Bud Light is accurately reflecting the gay community!

11) They're throwing a bouquet at a gay wedding.

Do you have any thoughts about this ad? Is it just another ad, or does it stand out to you for any reason? If I'm completely off, let me know!
