People Are Pissed Over Nick Jonas Orlando “Queer-Baiting”

Nick Jonas Controversial "Queer-Baiting" Orlando Shootings Speech at Stonewall

Well this is a toughie. Nick Jonas recently spoke outside of Stonewall in New York City at a vigil for the victims of the tragic Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. It took about 4 seconds for the internet to notice that there was possibly something off about a straight white guy speaking about the deaths of mostly Latino members of the LGBT community.

Of course this speech coincides with Nick Jonasty's media tour for his recently DROPPED album Last Year Was Complicated, and is fresh off the heels of a shit ton of questionably LGBTQueer-baiting shenanigans. In addition to declaring that he's technically had sex with a man (referring to his Kingdom gay three way), Jonas was recently on Watch What Happens Live, where he went on to a precuming Andy Cohen about how he loves to have his "firm ass" spanked. I want to help you, future hubby, but you gotta calm the fuck down!

At the vigil Nick expressed his solidarity with the gay community:

When you look out and see the faces here, you know that if we all raise our small voices, we can do a lot of good. Enough is enough, and I think we're heading in the right direction. Thank you so much for letting me speak, and please know you are not alone. New York is so strong, and we ain't scared of anybody.

I'm like, shaking my damn head right now, because Nick also managed to work in his connection to the proud people of New York City, even though he wasn't born there, and currently lives on the West Coast:

I grew up here in New York City and New Jersey, performing on Broadway shows, surrounded by some of my closest friends from the LGBT community. My father, a minister from New Jersey, shaped my view that love is love, that we are all equal.

Oh hun! I recently defended Nick Jonas here at Fleshbot against the queer-baiting accusations, because I felt he was mitigating the space between being an ally and being James Franco pretty well. Where as before it seemed like Jonas was using his fame to further important issues, this time around one could construe that he's using important issues to further his fame. What are your thoughts? Are people simply heaping their grief on the unsuspecting Nick Jonas, or did he go too far with speaking at the Orlando vigil in New York? I'd love to hear any thoughts!
