Sex From Important Retro Gay ‘Porn Boys in the Sand’

Warning: Only relive the amazing gay sex scenes from the 1971 gay porn classic Boys in the Sand if you want to look critically at a lot of the current porn out there! This feature length movie was the first gay porn to be treated as an actual piece of cinema, and director Wakefield Poole even took out ads in mainstream media such as The New York Times when promoting its release - which happened in actual theaters. This was of course during the brief period where porn and mainstream crossover was all the rage, a period encapsulated most famously by Deep Throat. But that makes me think of Linda Lovelace, which makes me think of Amanda Seyfried's mismanaged career, which makes me sad.

What makes me happy is the totally wild gay sex in Boys in the Sand, featuring the gay porn star to beat... off to at the time, Casey Donovan! The movie takes place on Fire Island and is broken into three segments - "Bayside," "Poolside," and "Inside" - all of which involve dreamy, no-frills sexual encounters. Your eyes are basically just treated to 90 minutes of dicks, buttholes, gorgeous bodies, and impossible tan lines.

The movie is culturally significant in that it brought gay relationships to the forefront of society, even if just for a brief period, and even if only within certain circles. At the time, homosexuality expressed itself in more sex-centric ways than it does today. Over time we've been increasingly allowed (or pressured, depending on your stance) to take part in previous strictly heterosexual parts of life, like marriage. in 1971 gay relationships were not yet normalized, and instead of holding hands while picking out a distressed lampshade at Restoration Hardware - with the intent of working on a future together because it's accepted and encouraged, some gays back in the 70's had to live out their sexual proclivities by getting finger blasted by a rando in an X-rated movie theater.

Of course, this isn't everyone by a long shot, but it's just what Boys in the Sand reminds me of. I feel like I can't really go as deep as I've gone into this without mentioning AIDS, because Casey Donovan died of the disease a decade and a half after this was released. Boys in the Sand is a time portal into what it was like before the AIDS epidemic of the 80's. I'm not going to lie, when I think about everything that these actors faced in the coming years, this movie makes me a little sad.
