Site owners from two of the East Coast’s most innovative studios joined a group of anonymous comment trolls on The Sword this week, but instead of quietly dusting off the haters, Dominic Ford ripped them a new asshole and handed it back with the help of CockyBoys‘ Jake Jaxson—and rightfully so!
The rude comments came in response to The Sword’s question “who said it better: put the fucking lotion in the basket” in a post featuring Dominic Ford’s new big-budget thriller, Silence of the Cams. The quote, delivered by scruffy hung top Hunter Maverick of the Maverick Men, was apparently a little too feminine for one anonymous commentor who said “mouth opens, purse falls out. This would have been better with no speaking.”
You have to have some pretty big balls to render a film “ruined” at the fault of seven words spoken by a supporting actor. It’s a pretty large statement to make, considering the fact that Dominic Ford won an XBIZ Award for 2013 Gay Web Company of the Year, the film’s star, Trenton Ducati, is XBIZ’s 2013 Gay Performer of the Year, and the all-star cast is one of the best you could possibly build.
Dominic Ford’s response was nothing short of epic:
Hours later, CockyBoys’ Jake Jaxson, another award-winning director that regularly receives praise for being one of the few true innovators in the business, chimed in with some thoughts of his own:
With the recent overwhelming tragedies in the industry, are vicious criticisms via comments really the best way to let studios know what we do and do not like?
Let me be clear: I don’t believe it’s The Sword’s duty to censor comments like this, as I believe censorship is more evil than the comments themselves. However, there’s a mild form of censorship I think we should all be practicing continually, and it’s called decency. You shouldn’t be smashing away at your keyboard with words you’d never say to a performer’s face.
Involvement with porn becomes an automatic, unthinking grounds for discrimination. The same people who fire or “out” porn and former performers must have watched porn. But the porn viewer can conceal his/her enjoyment of pornography. So long as this is true, the many people who have masturbated to pornography – and this includes most men and an increasing number of women – don’t have to feel any connection to the well-being of porn performers, who have provided the viewers with sexual pleasure.
All that is a broad, societal issue. But what about smaller, personal instances of discrimination? Porn viewers make discriminate against porn viewers on a smaller scale, through unthinking slut-shaming. But porn performers aren’t just a spectacle, they are, in one sense, the sexual partners of the people who watch them. Their images and actions tie into the arousal and orgasm of the viewer. Why are we asking, “What is it with gay porn?” but not asking, “What is it with the way society treats people who bring them pleasure?”
Have beef with a studio or performer in particular? Save your breath, because we can guarantee Dominic Ford and Hunter Maverick don’t give a fuck.
Here’s the trailer in question. The only bad thing about it is the lack of Hunter’s cock, and that’s something I would definitely tell Dominic Ford to his face. Ha!
I agree with the idea that if you don’t have something nice to say it’s better to say nothing, if in theory but not always in practice. But not everyone feels the same way. If you expect comments to only be positive and supporting, you’re pretty naive.

Redboy – I get where you’re coming from. I think the issue is that people are often critical without being constructive. Posting a negative comment, by itself, accomplishes nothing. I work in porn, so I read these comments often. I don’t mind a viewer saying something negative if they do so in a constructive way that helps me improve my end product. It’s the people who offer nothing beyond their negative attitudes that need to learn how to shut their mouths.
Redboy70
It totally agree with what you’re saying, but educating the entire world on good manners seems to be an impossible task. I also think that the porn industry is one of judgement– who’s the hottest, the newest, etc. There’s a down side to asking for praise.
GayhawkAZ
I can’t agree more. We’re always being told this guy or that guy is the “hottest thing in porn today!” When that’s done, you’re always making the case that others out there are less than what you’ve just held up as the “hottest”. It’s not nasty criticism like the folks on The Sword (the mgmt of which I feel basically eggs the haters on to a degree), but it is something.

I think it is tasteless to go on a site and leave nasty comments about something that one has chosen to view at length, but for a site to offer a comment section and expect all comments to be positive seems incredibly naive. In this day and age it is rare that people are compelled to leave comments about something positive as opposed to negative. I also think that performers in porn are used to being praised and it is probably jarring when that doesn’t happen and there is a harsh response in the other direction. It also must be very uncomfortable to be performing in a way that leaves one vulnerable only to have that performance trashed and maligned. I don’t watch the Maverick Men’s films, not because of Hunter Maverick, but his partner. I find their films to be a bit creepy, but I don’t have anything to bitch about because I don’t watch them, I’ve seen enough to know that I don’t want to. When you’re a performer and you’re in a place where people are saying unkind things, it is wise to remember that there are many more people who enjoy your work than those who don’t. Focus on that. If the number of viewers who don’t appreciate your work doesn’t outnumber those that do, you are in a fortunate position and the rest is just par for the course. If your ego is that sensitive, you might not want to read the comments at all because trash talking in a comment section is unavoidable.

Yes, it is the obligation of the site owners to moderate vicious comments of readers as well as their own. I have been extremely troubled by the Sword and others (one of which has a penchant for publishing highly personal information such as arrest records of porn stars including one who later committed suicide). It is a climate of hatred directed toward people who have no means to defend themselves and they have become highly personal in their attacks. Why the studios keep cooperating with these bottom feeders is beyond me.

Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, etc…. if you’re a celebrity (even a z-list porn star or studio), you should not expect everyone to like your work. You get paid millions (or in the case, maybe hundreds of thousands) for working 20 hours a week. I don’t think we should be bashing each other, BUT if I made that amount of money, I could seriously overlook some random comments. If Lady Gaga listened to everyone who criticized her or her work, she wouldn’t even exist. They should use their balls for something other than f#cking and man up.

Wow. That was horrible just watching the trailer! The “acting” sucked harder than those boy’s loose booties. The dudes weren’t attractive at all. Well I guess to white men and all the white men lovers they are but to me, uh uh. When are we going to get movies with everyday people that you find hot on the street that can act! Dominic Ford has NO reason to be upset with someone telling the truth. That was lame.

There are plenty of sites that have a comment section that has a no personal attacks rule. I actually stay away from the comment sections on sites where the vitrol is just a bit to caustic.

Comment Wars: Which Gay Porn Studio Wants You to “Shut the Fuck Up” with Your Hateful Comments?

It reminds me of a concept Conner Habib touched on in a recent essay titled “Why Do Gay Pornstars Kill Themselves?“. Conner says:
Have beef with a studio or performer in particular? Save your breath, because we can guarantee Dominic Ford and Hunter Maverick don’t give a fuck.
