Dan Savage: “How Can You Be So Ignorant And Actually Get Someone To Fuck You?”

We peruse a lot of newspaper and internet columns to compile our Best of Sex Advice feature, and whenever we do that there’s one question that always occurs to us but never gets answered by the experts—why are people so stupid when it comes to sex? Everyone wants to fuck yet no one seems to know how to do it — and considering that they have to live in them for their entire lives, people know surprisingly little about their bodies. We figured if anyone could solve this riddle for us, it would be the gay godfather of sex advice Dan Savage. So in Part Two of our interview he tackles the biggest question of them all: Why are we all so dumb? The answers may surprise you. (Or maybe they won’t.)

    @wilmawonker: Hey now, it’s more a matter of getting properly educated. I have known plenty of women that don’t know anything about their vulvas. It’s a national problem, not a gender one.

    Susan B — how is it that you can’t see the videos at work, and yet you’re able to access this site at work? You either have a pretty open-minded IT department, or you know a way around the firewall and the blocking software (in which case, couldn’t you get see the videos anyway?)

    I so ♥ Dan Savage. I was fortunately raised by very liberal pre-hippies (Beatnik generation, actually). My folks had gay friends, lesbian friends, and of course straight friends. I grew up as the third generation of a prominent local family in a small town (~5000 at the time). The local gay florist was a childhood playmate of my dad’s, and his life-partner was the town’s postmaster. My mother’s college roomate at Occidental made a big production of coming out to my mother ten years after the fact, at which time mom shrugged, giggled, and told Linda she already knew! Anyway, I was never ignorant about sexual specifics, because I knew I could just ask mom & dad (I’m now 44, and I often get classic hetero porn on DVD as a gift for their collection).

    I came into existence because my parents thought coitus interruptus was birth control in 1963… both were in college at the time…!
