Take Your DAVID Award And Shove It: Gay Porn Award Drama!

2007_10_24_david.jpgClaiming that the winner somehow “bought” the trophy is a common enough complaint in any type of media award ceremony (especially when it’s those who didn’t win the award are doing the complaining.) But in the case of the DAVID gay porn awards that were handed out at the Venus Erotic Expo in Berlin last week, things are even murkier: several producers claim that the organizers of the awards told them explicitly that they’d only be nominated if they paid for advertising or sponsorship, and Titan’s Bruce Cam declined a Lifetime Achievement Award in protest of the numerous low-end bareback titles that were to be honored at the ceremony as well. Whether this spells the end of the DAVID awards remains to be seen. (Though to tell the truth, it won’t be much of a loss if it disappears, since you should just pay attention to a reputable, completely objective porn award outfit like GAYVN anyway. Right?)

    Treasure Island Media makes much better films than that silly drag queen “Chi Chi” and better than Titan too. My guess is they both see the handwriting on the wall that bareback is gaining market share and they’re worried – and a bit jealous of Paul Morris for making films people want to watch!

    I’ve often wondered why the gay porn trade doesn’t adopt something similar to the Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation like the straight porn producers. The PCR rapid HIV test has only a two-week detection window, unlike the six months of the older ELISA test. Do you suppose it is resisted by the onscreen talent who might face blacklisting if they fail the test? Are we to assume that all of Paul Morris’ performers are already HIV+, and feel they have little to fear from additional exposure?

    @Charles_Barrett: The difference between the gay porn industry and the straight porn industry is that your HIV stats does not exclude you from performing in porn as it does in the straight industry. There is generally an assumption that several people are positive and the safer sex guidelines are centered around that.

    @narymary: So we then just assume all bareback performers are HIV+…? Given that many of them sport tattoos stating “HIV+” or the biohazard emblem near the crotch, I have always assumed such.
